Howell hits 2 HRs in Fillies’ win over Oakland Catholic
Kayla Howell hit two home runs and drove in six to help lead Laurel Highlands to a 10-2 victory over Oakland Catholic on Wednesday in Section 2-4A play at Laurel Highlands.
Howell scored two runs and drew a walk, as the Fillies improved to 2-0 in the section and 3-3 overall.
Izzy Coleman earned the complete-game victory by allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits over seven innings. She had seven strikeouts and walked four.
Laurel Highlands’ Chloe Komacko was 3 for 4 with three singles and three runs scored. Teammates Harlie Dirda and Zoe Robson had two hits apiece. Both of Robson’s hits were doubles.
The Fillies scored four runs in the second inning, one in the third and fourth, and another four in the fifth.
Chloe Fettis doubled and Nina Hillard tripled for the Eagles (0-1, 1-2).
Frazier 3, Mount Pleasant 2 — The Lady Commodores rallied from a two-run deficit with three runs in the sixth to edge the Lady Vikings in non-section play at Frazier.
After recording one hit through five innings, Frazier came alive in the sixth when starting and winning pitcher Addison Hiles singled to lead off the frame. Zoey Zurenski, who broke up Danica Trainer’s no-hitter in the fourth, bunted and reached first base on an error.
Hiles scored on Grace Vaughn’s double to left field.
Zurenski scored on Emme Travalena’s singled to center field, and an error allowed Vaughn to sprint home for a 3-2 lead.
Hiles sent down the first two batters in the seventh, but walked the next two before inducing a pop up to second base for the final out in the seventh.
Hiles earned the win in the pitching circle after allowing two earned runs on four hits over seven innings. She struck out and walked three.
Trainer allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings. She had 12 strikeouts and walked one.
The Lady Vikings (2-3) scored their runs in the top of the first with two outs. Trainer reached on an infield single and courtesy runner Layla Gratzinger scored on Gigi Stanek’s double to right field. Stanek scored on Kendra Brunson’s base hit to right field for a 2-0 lead.
Carmichaels 12, Charleroi 2 — Carys McConnell hit two home runs and drove in six to help lead the Lady Mikes to a non-section triumph against the Lady Cougars at Charleroi.
McConnell had two singles and scored three runs. She hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth. McConnell singled in the first run of the game in the first frame.
Teammates Kaitlyn Waggett and Ashton Batis also homered. Batis drove in three runs when she hit her shot in the second inning. Waggett hit a line-drive homer to center field in the sixth. She had four hits and scored three runs.
Bailey Barnyak yielded two earned runs on two hits over six innings. She had 12 strikeouts and walked six. Barnyak singled and drove in a run on a groundout in the first.
Carmichaels improved to 4-0 this season. The Lady Mikes open section play on Friday at Jefferson-Morgan.
Ariahna Blouse and Lyla Brunner each drove in a run for the Lady Cougars (2-4).
West Greene 10, Avella 0 — The Lady Pioneers were dominant in their Section 2-1A victory over the Lady Eagles at Center Township Park in Rogersville.
West Greene (1-0, 6-0) scored four runs in the first inning, two apiece in the second and third frames, and one each in the fourth and fifth.
The Lady Pioneers had 11 hits, including two apiece from Emmaline Beazell, Khyler Davis, Payton Gilbert and Samantha Zimmerman.
Beazell and Zimmerman each had two RBIs. Beazell had the game’s only extra-base hit with a double.
Gilbert earned the pitching triumph after allowing no runs on five hits through five innings. She had two strikeouts and no walks.
Serenity Bradbury had two hits for Avella (0-1, 1-5).
Beth-Center 14, Mapletown 3 — The Lady Bulldogs used a nine-run first inning to take control early in defeating the Lady Maples in Section 2-1A play at Mapletown.
Beth-Center (1-0, 1-4) had a 9-1 lead after the first inning, and a 10-2 advantage following the second. B-C scored four runs in the third. The Lady Maples (0-1, 2-4) added a run in the fourth.
The Lady Bulldogs’ Kendall Welsh earned the pitching victory by yielding three runs (two earned) on two hits in five innings. She had five strikeouts and walked four. Welsh had three RBIs.
Bella Stepp was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Keira Lamp was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs.
Beth-Center’s Sarah Bader doubled for the game’s lone extra-base hit.
Thomas Jefferson 11, Albert Gallatin 0 – Ali Chalovich hit a three-run homer and Morgan Alisesky added a two-run shot in the Lady Jaguars’ six-inning Section 4-5A win at Albert Gallatin.
Winning pitcher Aubrey Shaffer struck out 10 in throwing a one-hitter for TJ (1-1, 3-2).
Maggie Quertinmont had the lone hit for the Lady Colonials (0-2, 2-3).
Baseball
Brownsville 5, Washington 4 — The Falcons “ran it off” when Jeremiah McDonald sprinted from third base to score on a wild pitch for a Section 4-3A victory at Redstone Field in Republic.
With one out and the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, McDonald drew a four-pitch walk and Gene Thorpe reached on a base on balls before McDonald scored the winning run.
Brownsville (2-2, 2-2) had a 1-0 lead after the first inning before the Prexies (0-4, 1-7) tied the game in the top of the third. The Falcons regained the advantage with two in the third, and added another run in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. Washington scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game.
Tristan Coney tripled and Fernando Lozano doubled for the Prexies, who had eight hits.
Brownsville didn’t have an extra-base hit, but Johnathan Vasbinder had two singles, two RBIs, two runs scored and stole three bases.
Hunter Pelehac earned the victory on the mound after allowing four earned runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
Albert Gallatin 8, Uniontown 2; Albert Gallatin 4, Uniontown 3 — The Colonials swept a Section 2-4A doubleheader over the Red Raiders at Bailey Park.
The teams were scheduled to play at Bailey Park on Monday and German-Masontown Park on Tuesday, but inclement weather postponed both games.
Uniontown (0-4, 1-5) was the home team in Game 1. Albert Gallatin (2-2, 2-3) scored two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. The Red Raiders countered with a run in the bottom of the frame. AG added two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Jason Myers earned the pitching win in Game 1. He yielded one earned run on three hits over six innings. He struck out and walked three. Geno Valenti pitched the seventh inning.
The Colonials’ Ben Lilley and Evan Weakland doubled.
Valenti earned the pitching win in Game 2, as Albert Gallatin was the home team on the scoreboard. He allowed two earned runs on four hits over 5 ⅔ innings with one strikeout and no walks. Matt Malinksy closed out the game to earn the save.
The Colonials had a 4-1 lead entering the seventh. The Red Raiders scored twice to cut the deficit to one.
Weakland and Jake Bellish doubled.
Gary Smitley doubled for the Red Raiders.
Elizabeth Forward 5, Laurel Highlands 1 — The Mustangs couldn’t get their bats going against the Warriors’ Jack Crovak in a Section 2-4A loss at Laurel Highlands.
Crovak allowed one run (none earned) on three hits in 6 ⅓ innings. He struck out 11 and walked two. Crovak had a two-run double in the third, as Elizabeth Forward (3-1, 6-1) built up a 5-0 lead.
Cy Herchelroath had a run-scoring double in the third. Nate Grimm knocked in a run in the third on a sacrifice flyout.
Noah Lion took the pitching loss for the Mustangs (0-2, 1-3), but he had a strong game in allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over seven innings. He had eight strikeouts and walked one.
Lion had two of Laurel Highlands’ three hits.
The Mustangs’ run came in the third when Parker Hoff walked to lead-off the inning, and with one out, Lion singled to left field. Hoff scored on an error.
Jefferson-Morgan 8, Carmichaels 1 — The Rockets earned a much-needed victory over the Mikes in Section 1-A play at Jefferson-Morgan while giving coach John Curtis career win No. 399.
J-M (1-3, 2-3) scored two runs in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth innings for a 6-0 lead. Carmichaels (3-1, 4-2) scored its run in the top of the sixth, but the Rockets added two more.
John Woodward pitched 4 ⅓ innings of two-hit ball. He had four strikeouts and walked three in earning the victory.
Brayden Ellsworth had three RBIs for the home team. He also pitched one scoreless inning.
