Uniontown senior Syner tops field in Falcon 5K

Vanderbilt’s Ethan Syner, who is a senior at Uniontown, crosses the finish line to win the Falcon 5K on Saturday at Brownsville Area High School.

Uniontown senior Ethan Syner held off teammate Logan Davis to win the 29th annual Falcon 5K Saturday morning at Brownsville Area High School.

Syner completed the course 11 seconds ahead of Davis to win the race in 17:55. Davis clocked in at 18:06 and McClellandtown’s Brock Mace, who runs cross country for Albert Gallatin, was third in 18:45.

The Red Raiders’ Matthew Page placed fourth in 19:12. West Greene freshman Joel Grimes was fifth in 19:33.

Uniontown sophomore Charley Murtha won the women’s race in 21:12. Teammate Hannah Foster placed second in 23:40 and Brownsville’s Areli Caldwell was third in 24:20.

Leisenring’s George Zubeck won the 5K walk in 39:09. Farmington’s Correna Smithburger broke the tape in the women’s walk with a time of 43:01.

Allison’s Jace McKennen was third overall and second in the men’s race in 44:28. Fellow Allison resident Maris Seto was fourth overall and second in the women’s race with a time of 44:46. Holbrook’s Kim Grimes was fifth overall and third woman overall with a time of 45:48. Jeff Grimes was right behind Kim Grimes in 45:49 for sixth place overall (third in the men’s division).

Delaney Ridge won the 13-and-under age group women’s award in 28:03 and seven-year-old Marcus Mihalsky was the top runner in the men’s 13-and-under age group with a time of 39:15.

Page won the 14-to-16 age group award for men, and Uniontown’s Addison Caruso won the women’s 14-to-16 age group in 24:33.

Belle Vernon’s Eli Zahuranic won the 14-to-17 men’s age group in 20:12. Eryka Hacnkey was the top woman to cross the finish line in the 14-to-17 age group with a time of 25:03.

The following age group winners in the 5K run were: Josh Zahuranic (Men: 20-29, 25:01); Abigail Vomish (Women: 20-29, 26:07); Richard Black (Men: 30-39, 23:31); Jerrod Murtha (Men: 40-49, 21:22); Meghan Reilly-Best (Women: 40-49, 33:26); Mark Seto (Men: 60-69, 40:43).

The Little Falcon half-mile race was contested prior to the 5K. Allison’s Nash Tastinger, 2, was first in the three-and-under boys age group in a time of 7:33. Pittsburgh’s Gabriel Kovacic was the top runner in the boys 4-to-7 age group in 3:52. Brianna Nicholson took the girls 4-to-7 age group in 4:59.

The Falcon 5K benefits the Brownsville cross country team.
