Lady Gators hold off West Greene

West Greene gave Geibel Catholic everything it could handle, but the Lady Gators were able to pull out a 51-45 victory in Section 2-1A on Thursday at West Greene Junior/Senior High School in girls basketball action.

Geibel Catholic jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter, but the home team used a 9-6 advantage in the second period to cut the deficit to 22-17 at halftime.

The Lady Pioneers (0-1, 4-2) had a 13-12 edge in the third, but the Lady Gators (1-0, 6-0) outscored West Greene by two in the fourth.

Geibel Catholic’s Emma Larkin had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Janiah Darnell added 10.

The Lady Pioneers’ Jillissa Yeater had 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and Kendra Tharp put in 18 for West Greene.

Beth-Center 49, Apollo-Ridge 42 — The Lady Bulldogs out scored the Lady Vikings by nine in the fourth quarter to rally for a non-section victory.

The win was the first for Beth-Center head coach Elizabeth Trump.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-4) were led in scoring by Violet Trump’s 24 points. She pulled down 15 rebounds for the double-double. Teammate Kyleigh McDaniel added nine points.

Apollo-Ridge’s Madison Hughley scored a team-high 13 points.

Trump had six points in the fourth quarter. Beth-Center’s Mary Bower, a ninth grader, connected on a three-pointer in the final frame.

After both teams scored 10 points in the first quarter, the Lady Vikings (2-4) used a 14-11 advantage in the second for a three-point halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs had a 13-12 edge in the third period.

Waynesburg Central 60, Brownsville 39 — The Lady Raiders trailed by five after the first quarter, but took control in the second period and never looked back in a Section 3-3A victory over the Lady Falcons at Brownsville Area High School.

Waynesburg Central improved to 1-0 in section play and 4-0 overall. Brownsville dropped to 0-1 in the section and 1-3 overall.

The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Falcons, 17-5, in the second frame for a 27-20 halftime advantage.

Waynesburg outscored Brownsville, 16-8, in the third, and 17-11 in the fourth.

The Lady Falcons’ Skyler Gates scored a game-high 23 points. Teammate Ava Clark added 13.

The Lady Raiders had three players in double figures, led by Tess Pauley’s 18 points. Peyton Cowell had 17 and Emma Blair dropped 14.

Frazier 52, Carmichaels 33 — Allie Yauch scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Commodores to a non-section victory over the Lady Mikes at Henry DiVirgillio Field House.

Frazier’s Malana Burton was in double figures with 13 points.

Ke’Lani Chun led Carmichaels (1-4) in scoring with nine points.

The Lady Commodores improved to 2-3.

Belle Vernon 53, Ringgold 23 — The Lady Leopards trailed after the first quarter, but more than made up for it to earn a Section 3-4A triumph over the Lady Rams at Ringgold High School.

Belle Vernon (1-0, 4-1) used a 22-5 advantage in the second quarter for a 30-15 lead at halftime. The Lady Leopards had a 13-4 advantage in the third and a 10-4 edge in the fourth.

Ringgold’s Jada Gernot scored a game-high 12 points.

Belle Vernon’s Aubrey Brown and Lyla McConnell shared high-scoring honors for their team with 11 points apiece. The Lady Leopards’ Saylor Lee added 10.

Mount Pleasant 41, Yough 29 — The Lady Vikings’ defense shut down the Lady Cougars in the second half to earn a Section 3-4A triumph at Mount Pleasant Area High School.

Mount Pleasant (1-0, 3-2) had a 15-3 advantage in the third quarter, and an 11-8 edge in the fourth.

Yough (1-0, 4-2) had a 7-4 lead after the opening period.

The Lady Vikings were led in scoring by Ryleigh Drzal’s 12 points. Teammate Morgan Gesinski put in 10.

South Park 55, Laurel Highlands 17 — The Lady Eagles jumped out early and cruised to a Section 3-4A victory over the Lady Mustangs at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Laurel Highlands High School.

South Park (1-0, 1-3) had a 20-5 lead in the first quarter and a 37-7 advantage at halftime. The visitors had a 10-2 edge in the third and both teams scored eight points in the fourth.

The Lady Eagles’ Nika Contakos had 15 points. Teammate Hayley Bennett put in 14.

Elizabeth Forward 74, Southmoreland 12 — Four Lady Warriors were in double figures en route to a Section 3-4A triumph over the Lady Scotties in Section 3-4A play.

Elizabeth Forward (1-0, 3-2) jumped out early in the first quarter and won handily.

The Lady Warriors’ Kaelynn Settles had a game-high 19 points. EF’s Mia Sostaric and Loralie Smith had 12 points apiece, and Addison Wach added 10.

Ashley Seder led Southmoreland in scoring with five points.

Kiski Area 59, Connellsville 47 — The Lady Falcons’ Saige Mickens shared game-high scoring honors, but the Lady Cavaliers earned a non-section victory at Connellsville Area High School.

Mickens, a ninth grader, scored 20 points. Kiski’s Jada Blenciak also scored 20 points.

Connellsville’s Maggie Orndorff had 16 points. The Lady Cavaliers’ Gianna Devito put in 14.

Kiski improved to 4-1, while the Lady Falcons dropped to 3-3.

Boys basketball

Carrick 49, Mount Pleasant 41 — The Vikings finished strong in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders had enough of an advantage after three periods for a non-section victory at Mount Pleasant Junior/Senior High School.

Carrick (4-2) had a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and a 25-19 halftime advantage. The Raiders extended their lead to 44-26 after three periods before Mount Pleasant (2-3) outscored the visitors, 15-5, to cut the deficit to single digits.

Carrick’s Teshawn Beasley led the game in scoring with 23 points. Teammate Kejuan Johnson had 10 points.

The Vikings were led in scoring by Cole Massari, who put in 13 points.

Serra Catholic 98, California 30 — The Eagles jumped out early and never looked back in downing the Trojans in non-section play at Serra Catholic.

Serra Catholic (3-3) had a 35-8 lead after the first quarter and a 57-16 halftime advantage. The Eagles outscored California, 19-4, in the third quarter and 22-10 in the fourth period.

Serra Catholic’s Kris Sharp scored a game-high 27 points. Teammate Brayden Graham had 24. Max Lape (11) and Tyler Sapida (10) were also in double figures for the Eagles.

Alan Dennis led the Trojans (1-1) in scoring with 11 points.

Hockey

Connellsville 12, Sewickley Academy 1 — Mason Mazak scored four goals in the Falcons’ PIHL Division 2 victory at CFS Bank Arena in Rostraver Township.

Connellsville (6-3-0-0) has 24 points, and is tied with Morgantown in the gold division standings, but the Falcons have played one less game.

Connellsville had a 5-0 lead after the first period and an 8-0 following the second. The Falcons pushed their lead to nine in the third period before the Panthers (2-9-0-1, 7 points) got on the scoreboard.

Connellsville had a 61-6 advantage in shots on goal. Falcons goalie Michael Bevan made five saves.

Connellsville’s Connor Basigner scored two goals and assisted on two tallies. The Falcons’ Matty Smith scored one goal and added three helpers.

Logan Jenkins, Santo Crucio, TJ Snyder, Larry Barrofio and Will Whittaker also scored for Connellsville.

Sam Denny and Logan Hause had two assists apiece. Jenkins and Presley Overly each added an assist.

Jacob Stanislaw scored for Sewickley Academy on a power-play goal that was assisted by Mario Thomas and Mathias Lieb.

Swimming

Boys: West Mifflin 74, Belle Vernon 36; Girls: Belle Vernon 76, West Mifflin 55 — The Leopards qualified for six WPIAL events in splitting a non-section meet with the Titans.

Belle Vernon girls team improved to 1-2, while the boys fell to 0-3.

Megan Shusteric recorded a WPIAL cut with victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Teammate Josie Nikolic qualified for the WPIAL meet with wins in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle.

Nikolic and Shusteric were part of the Lady Leopards’ 400 freestyle relay team that qualified for the WPIAL meet.

Emily Newbould won the 200 and 500 freestyle, and Ali Watson the 100 butterfly. Both were on the 400 freestyle relay team.

Gaige Watson made the cut for the WPIAL in the boys 200 IM. Watson won the 100 breaststroke.

The Leopards’ Brady Malekovich won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Derek Milkovich earned victories in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
