Colonials’ Morris wins title at Southmoreland Holiday Classic

Albert Gallatin sophomore Gavin Morris won his first three bouts in decisive fashion before earning a decision in the finals to win the Southmoreland Holiday Classic on Tuesday at Southmoreland High School.

The Colonials’ 107 pounder pinned his first two opponents and recorded a technical fall to advance to the finals, where he edged Burgettstown’s Carter Baker, 3-1.

Frazier’s Jonah Erdely not only won his second championship at the Southmoreland Holiday Classic, but he recorded his 100th-career victory in a 7-0 decision in the semifinals. Erdely edged Plum’s Owen Campbell in the finals, 2-1, for the title at 152.

Beth-Center’s Malachi Peak, who attends school at California but wrestles for the Bulldog as part of a co-op, won the championship at 189 with a 4-1 decision over Corry Area’s Landon Nickerson in the finals. Peak earned technical falls in his first three bouts before recording a fall in the semifinals. He improved his season record to 13-0.

Peak’s teammate, Noah Layhue, who is also a student at California, edged North East’s Logan Latimore, 5-4, for the title at 215. Layhue, who is 17-1 this season, won by fall in his first three matches.

The Bulldogs’ Noah McCollum recorded a fall in the consolation final to place third at 107. Teammate Shane Cronin won by major decision, 14-3, at 127 for the bronze medal.

Beth-Center’s Mason Wright was fourth at 133.

The Colonials’ Greyson Morris placed fourth at 114. Teammates Alex Kinsley (121), Julius Poole (133) and Roman Smith (189) were sixth, and Colin Rockwell was eighth at 285.

Albert Gallatin was seventh in the team standings with 120.5 points.

Mount Pleasant had two place winners in Tristan Wtorkiewicz (4th/152) and Parker Holt (8th/121).

Kaden Shannon of the host school won his first two bouts by fall to reach the semifinals, but he had to forfeit out of the last three matches to place sixth at 285.

Laurel Highlands’ Mark Reed won three matches, including two by fall, but he dropped an 11-6 decision in the “blood round” to finish one win shy of placing at 189.

West Allegheny won the team championship with 210.5 points. Butler was second with 152 and Corry came in third at 150.5.

Penn Hills Classic — Brownsville had four wrestlers reach the podium in the one-day tournament at Penn Hills High School.

Devin Drake won by fall at 172 to finish in fifth place. Cooper Cetera pinned his opponent at 285 in the fifth-place bout.

Kody Gates edged Jeremiah Bowey-Sinclair of Westinghouse, 6-4, for fifth at 145.

Geoffrey Douglas was sixth at 121.
