Lady Red Raiders sweep Geibel Catholic

Uniontown earned its second straight sweep this season in a 3-0 victory over Geibel Catholic on Wednesday at “The Swamp” on the campus of Geibel Catholic Junior/Senior High School in non-section girls volleyball play.

The Lady Red Raiders won by set scores of 25-6, 25-9 and 25-17 to improve to 3-0 overall. Uniontown is 1-0 in Section 3-3A.

Maggie Campbell led the Lady Red Raiders in assists with 17. She also had six aces. Sister and teammate Hallie Campbell had four aces. Jocelyn Pindrock added four aces.

Ava Livingood led the visitors in kills with 10. Lyric McLee had six. Uniontown libero Qua’Mari Scott led her team in digs with 10.

The Lady Red Raiders return to the court next Tuesday in Section 3-3A play against Thomas Jefferson. The junior varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The varsity contest will start roughly 20 minutes following the completion of the JV match.

Laurel Highlands 3, Carmichaels 0 — The Mustangs earned a non-section sweep over the Lady Mikes on Tuesday at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium.

Laurel Highlands won by set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15.

The Mustangs’ Sara Reed had a team-high 12 assists, and added 12 digs, four aces and two kills. Teammate Diondra Brown had 13 digs, four kills, three aces and two blocks.

Lucy Baker had four kills, three assists, one ace and a dig for Laurel Highlands (1-1).

The home team’s Esther Waqanivalu had five kills and helped out defensively with five digs. She had three blocks and two aces. Addie Ciez had two kills, aces and digs apiece.

Brinley Duncan (3 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig) and Emelia Cavaliere (6 digs) also contributed for the Mustangs.

Girls soccer

Albert Gallatin 4, Uniontown 2 — The Lady Colonials scored two-second half goals to defeat the Lady Red Raiders in the Section 3-3A opener for both teams on Wednesday at Bill Power Stadium.

Ellie Carei tied the match at 2-2 with a goal in the second half before Albert Gallatin (1-0-0, 1-3-0) netted a pair.

Sadie Hostetler scored for Uniontown (0-1-0, 0-4-0) in the first half.

Kendal Nehls had over 15 saves for the home team.

The Lady Red Raiders return to action on Tuesday when they head up Bailey Avenue to face cross-town rival Laurel Highlands (0-1-0, 1-1-1) in section play at 7 p.m.

Thomas Jefferson 5, Laurel Highlands 2 — The Lady Mustangs battled the Lady Jaguars tooth-and-nail in Section 3-3A play, but Thomas Jefferson was able to prevail.

Ava Ruvacalba and Camryn McClean scored for Laurel Highlands (0-1-1, 1-1-1).

Bentworth 2, Waynesburg Central 0 — Brielle Dillon and Brina Orsatti scored in the first half and the Lady Bearcats held on for a shutout in Section 2-1A play at Waynesburg.

Alex Jackson and Bella Moyer assisted on both tallies for Bentworth (1-0-0, 3-1-1).

The Lady Bearcats’ Julia Brandau came away with a clean sheet.

“We had a really great performance tonight,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “We looked like a veteran, experienced group that followed the game plan to a ‘T’ and got a three-full points on the road. Brina Orsatti and Meredith Allender put in a captains’ performance tonight. They are a rock.”

Belle Vernon 0, Ringgold 0 — The Lady Leopards and Lady Rams played to a scoreless draw in Section 1-2A action at James Weir Stadium.

Belle Vernon’s Skylar Salay stopped nine shots on goal for the clean sheet.

The Lady Leopards are 1-1-1 in section play and 2-1-1 overall.

Ringgold is 1-1-1 in the section and 1-3-1 overall.

Connellsville 2, Greensburg Salem 1 — Avery Lape scored with 10:25 remaining in the Lady Falcons’ victory on Tuesday in non-section play at Connellsville Stadium.

The Lady Golden Lions took a 1-0 lead at 5:58 of the first half following Mattie Carr’s goal off a corner kick. Greensburg Salem (1-1-0, 2-3-0) had a one-goal advantage at halftime.

Alicia Richter leveled the match with 34:24 remaining in the second half.

Connellsville (0-1-0, 2-2-1) put 17 shots on target, while the Lady Golden Lions had seven.

Sara Tinkey made six saves for the home team.

Greensburg Salem keeper Abby Saville had 15 stops.

The Lady Falcons had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Connellsville had a tough Section 2-4A opener on Wednesday, as it lost to Mount Lebanon, 6-0.

Boys golf

Avella 207, Frazier 227 — The Eagles’ Tristan Davis carded a 1-over-par 37 to help lead his team to victory at Indian Run Golf Club on Wednesday in non-section play.

The Commodores were led by Eli Cernuska’s 40. Teammate Mason Ritz had a 41, and Gavin Seich shot 46. Nash Fouch and Logan Solomon closed the scoring for Frazier with both players shooting 50.

The Eagles’ Noah Greene had a 41 and Nate Cilia fired a 42. Alex Brandenburg (43) and Kamden Jeffers (44) closed the scoring for the home team.

Girls golf

Greensburg Central Catholic 192, Geibel Catholic 247 — The Lady Centurions’ Alayna Stawovy earned medalist honors after shooting a 2-under-par 35 on the front nine at Linden Hall Golf Course on Wednesday in Section 1-2A play.

Teammate Kennedy Kelly had a 47 and Betsabe Chapman fired a 48 for Greensburg Central Catholic, who earned the section victory. Cayla Kelly carded a 62 for the visitors.

The Lady Gators were led by Paige Dolan’s 57. Teammate Emma Larkin shot a 59 and Olivia Pletcher 62. Nolace Petrosky’s 69 rounded out the scoring.
