Gates records her 1,000 kill in Lady Falcons’ victory

Brownsville’s Skyler Gates recorded her 1,000th-career kill in the Lady Falcons’ match against California on Monday at Brownsville Area High School.

Brownsville’s Skyler Gates recorded her 1,000th-career kill, as the Lady Falcons topped California, 3-1, on Monday in non-section girls volleyball play at Brownsville Area High School.

Brownsville won the first set, 25-14, before the Lady Trojans tied the match at 1-1 following a 31-29 victory in the second set. The Lady Falcons won the third set, 25-17, and the fourth, 25-16, to improve their season record to 5-0.

Gates had a team-high 22 kills that led to the milestone. The senior and University of Virginia volleyball commit added nine service points, five aces and four blocks.

Teammate Kenzie Adams was instrumental in setting up a number of Gates’ kills with 24 assists. Abigayle Thomas (15) and Lena Rechichar (12) paced Brownsville in service points. Ashley Evanchak led the Lady Falcons in digs.

Brownsville is 2-0 in Section 3-2A play.

Frazier 3, Southmoreland 0 — The Lady Commodores earned a non-section road victory at Southmoreland.

Frazier (3-1) won by set scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21.

The Lady Commodores’ Addison Schultz had a team-leading nine kills. She added five blocks. Teammate Addison Hiles led Frazier in digs (16) and service points.

Allie Monack had a team-high 13 assists. Maddie Salisbury chipped in with seven kills. Morgan Fisher had seven assists and was a force at the service line.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Geibel Catholic 2 — The Lady Rockets rallied for a non-section victory at Geibel Catholic Junior/Senior High School.

Geibel Catholic (1-5) won the first set, 25-13, but Jefferson-Morgan tied the match at 1-1 following a 28-26 victory in the second set. The Lady Gators won the third set, 26-24, before the Lady Rockets forced a fifth set with a 25-14 triumph in the fourth.

The visitors earned a 15-6 victory in the fifth set.

Boys golf

Belle Vernon 204, Connellsville 245 — Belle Vernon’s Jordan Mocello didn’t have the best start in bogeying the first hole during Monday’s Section 3-3A match against Connellsville at Cedarbrook Gold, but the senior birdied the second, fourth, fifth and ninth holes to shoot a 3-under-par 33 in a victory that clinched the section team championship for the Leopards.

Belle Vernon improved to 10-0 in section play and 10-1 overall. The Leopards have a three-match lead over Laurel Highlands with two remaining. Belle Vernon swept the season series with the Mustangs.

The Leopards’ Jack Edwards was 2-over-par with a 38, and Landon Vaccaro carded a 41 with birdies on the second and ninth holes. Edwards sank a birdie on the first hole.

Evan Mesco (45) and Connor Bergman (47) closed the scoring for Belle Vernon.

Hunter Konieczny led the Falcons (4-5, 4-8) in scoring with a 46. Toby Soltis shot a 47 and Nicky Farrell came in at 48.

Carson Colborn fired a 50 and Michael Roscart closed at 54.

Laurel Highlands 208, Albert Gallatin 226 — Kayden Smith earned medalist honors with a 37 in the Mustangs’ Section 3-3A win over the Colonials at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

At 6-3 in section play, the Mustangs are in a good spot to finish second in the team standings, which would earn them a berth into the WPIAL Class 3A team playoffs.

In the match against Albert Gallatin, Sevi Vecchiolla had a 40. Smith and Vecchiolla had one birdie apiece over nine holes.

Laurel Highlands’ Dan O’Neal carded a 43, and Damon and Ryan Revak shot 44s.

Garrett Snyder was the low score for the Colonials (2-8, 3-8) with a 39. Teammate Clay Smith shot a 45, and Tyler Felio and Logan Diamond finished with 47s. Gianni Paoli had a 48.

Waynesburg Central 184, Jefferson-Morgan 199 — The Raiders are on the verge of the Section 3-2A championship following a victory over the Rockets at Rohanna’s Golf Course.

Waynesburg’s Jarett Tretinik and Rykan Gustafson carded 35s to share medalist honors. Teammate Matt Eisiminger shot a 36 and Austin Surber had a 38. Lucas Slifko closed the scoring with a 40.

The Raiders improved to 9-0 in the section and 10-0 overall.

Urijah Teasdale paced Jefferson-Morgan (8-2, 8-4) with a 36. Teammate Miles Sowden came in at 38. Brayden Ellsworth fired a 39. Dominic and Trenton Sowden closed the scoring for the Rockets with each shooting 43s.

Carmichaels 210, Bentworth 225 — Eli Hastings sank two birdies on his way to a 1-over-par in the Mikes’ victory over the Bearcats at Chippewa Golf Club in Section 3-2A play.

Carmichaels improved to 6-3 in section play and 6-4 overall. The Mikes are still in contention for a spot in the team playoffs, but need to win their final three section matches and hope for some help.

Connor Lapana came in after Hastings at 39. Anthony Post birdied the ninth hole on his way to a 41.

Jayden Kerley shot a 46 and Chase Ankrom 48 for Carmichaels.

Sam Wade and Craig McDonald carded 43s in leading the Bearcats (1-9, 2-10). Trent Wolpink birdied the fifth hole and finished at 45.

Corbin McMurray birdied the seventh and ninth holes in shooting 47. Wyatt Snyder also fired a 47.

McKeesport 219, Uniontown 228 — Brock Stephenson’s 40 set the Tigers up in good position to earn a Section 3-3A triumph at Uniontown Country Club.

The Red Raiders’ Liam Glover kept his team in the match at No. 1 with a 42.

McKeesport’s Kaleb Smith fired a 43 and Ayden Lipchey had a 44 to put the Tigers in good position.

Graci Rodeheaver matched Lipchey’s 44. Jason Vansickle (46), Mason Payton (47) and Isaac Ellsworth (49) rounded out Uniontown’s top five.

Mason Michaels (45) and Tommy Minnick (47) closed out the scorecards for McKeesport.

Elizabeth Forward 185, Frazier 228 — The Warriors’ Aaron Didjunas and Luke Boyer shared medalist honors with both firing a 36 in Section 8-2A action at Youghiogheny Country Club.

Julien Hredocik had a 37, and Gavin Maddon and Blake Hvozdik carded 38s in the home team’s victory.

Mason Ritz led the Commodores in scoring with a 42. Eli Cernuska had a 43 and Logan Solomon came in at 46.

Nash Fouch (48) and Caden Biddle (49) closed the scoring for Frazier.

Charleroi 190, Geibel Catholic 241 — The Gators’ Seth Dolan carded a 1-under-par 35 at Mon Valley Country Club, but the Cougars came away with a Section 8-2A victory.

John Hess came in at 48 for Geibel Catholic. He was followed by Aiden Holt’s 49. Zander Zimmerman fired a 54 and Mason Speeney closed with a 55.

Girls soccer

Waynesburg Central 3, Beth-Center 0 — Kolbi Rastoka’s brace was more than enough scoring for the Lady Raiders in a Section 2-1A victory at Beth-Center Stadium in Fredericktown.

Waynesburg’s Emily Rafferty added the other goal. Ava DiAlesandro assisted on all three tallies.

Raiders keeper Peyton Cowell earned the clean sheet.

Waynesburg improved to 1-1-0 in section play and 4-1-0 overall.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 0-2-0 in the section and 3-2-0 overall.

Belle Vernon 1, McGuffey 0 — Payton Walsh set-up Ali Watson for a goal in the first half, and the Lady Leopards’ backline and keeper Rory Bastedo kept the Lady Highlanders off the scoreboard in a Section 1-2A triumph at James Weir Stadium.

Bastedo made eight saves, including an above-average stop as time was winding down in the second half.

Belle Vernon senior captain Kelsey Roskovich controlled the midfield for the Lady Leopards in helping to preserve the clean sheet for Bastedo, which drew praise for Belle Vernon coach Tracy Lovett.

“She (Roskovich) put the team on her back for 80 minutes,” Lovett said. “My senior captain was very impressive in her play. Once again, we had solid play by our back four.”

The Lady Leopards improved to 2-1-1 in the section and 4-1-1 overall.

McGuffey dropped to 1-2-0 in section play and 2-3-0 overall.

Mount Pleasant 2, Deer Lakes 1 — Camryn Kapr header in the game-winning goal in the second half for the Lady Vikings in a Section 4-2A match at Deer Lakes.

Mount Pleasant improved to 2-0-0 in section play after losing 1-0 to undefeated South Park on Saturday. The Lady Vikings are 4-1-1 overall.

The Lady Lancers (1-1-0, 5-1-0) dropped their first match of the season

Morgan Gesinski sent in a corner kick for the match winner.

Mount Pleasant opened the scoring in the first half when Gesinski sent in a corner that Addie Czekaj played and put in the back of the net.

Deer Lakes tied the match at 1-1, which held up until halftime.

Bentworth 14, California 2 — The Lady Bearcats took care of business in a Section 2-1A victory at Bentworth, but also set program history with their 200th victory.

The Lady Bearcats (2-0-0, 4-1-1) are the fastest program in school history to 200 wins.

Brielle Dillon had four goals for the home team. Megan Keturakis, Madelyn Johns and Brooke Leonetti each had a brace.

Bella Moyer, Kate Keturakis, Joelie Conkle and Jesse Laskey also scored for Bentworth.

“We played well,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “Califronia has some tough players. Overall, we did a good job of not losing them. It was good to get 30 girls 30-plus minutes tonight. It is really important for us to have some depth once we get to the middle part of the season.”

Boys soccer

Yough 2, Belle Vernon 1 — The Cougars protected their one-goal lead in the second half of a non-section match at Cougar Mountain.

Landon Bell scored the line goal for the Leopards (2-1-0, 3-4-1). Chris Showman assisted on Bell’s tally.

Morgan Bunch made four saves for the visitors.

Girls tennis

Mount Pleasant 5, Derry Area 0 — The Lady Vikings swept the Lady Trojans in Section 1-2A play at Mount Pleasant.

The Lady Vikings’ Bella Fullman, Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma and Ryleigh Drzal won in singles action.

Danica Trainer and Megan Bullock won at No. 1 doubles. Hannah Shawley and Chloe Zelmore earned a victory at No. 2. Both matches ended in straight sets.
