Mustang golfers top Red Raiders to clinch playoff spot

Damon Revak shot a 2-over-par 38 in Laurel Highlands’ 204-236 victory over cross-town rival Uniontown on Wednesday in Section 2-3A boys golf play at Uniontown Country Club.

Revak birdied the par-three second hole on the front nine, as the Mustangs (8-3, 8-4) clinched a berth in the WPIAL Class 3A team playoffs, which begin Oct. 7.

Laurel Highlands’ Kayden Smith and Sevi Vecchiolla each shot 40. Smith birdied the sixth and seventh holes, while Vecchiolla sank a birdie on the seventh.

Vecchiolla shot an eagle on the fourth hole, a par four.

Ryan Revak carded a 42 and Dan O’Neal shot a 44.

Liam Glover led the Red Raiders (1-9, 2-12) in scoring with a 42. Teammate Chandler Myers was the third player on either team to birdie the seventh hole on his way to a 46. Isaac Ellsworth and Graci Rodeheaver each had 49s, and Jackson Collins’ 50 closed the scoring for Uniontown.

Bentworth 224, Brownsville 224 (Bentworth wins in tiebreaker, 20-25) — The Bearcats and Falcons had to settle another match in a tiebreaker in Section 3-2A play at Carmichaels Golf Course.

Bentworth had a five-stroke edge in the tiebreaker to top the Falcons.

Brownsville’s Ben Vojacek birdied the sixth and seventh holes for a 2-over-par 39 on the front nine.

Trent Wolpink shot a 41 for the Bearcats’ low round.

The Falcons’ Ava Rohland had a 42. She had a birdie on the sixth hole, a par-five. Teammate Adam Vojacek shot a 45, and Cooper Cetera and Hunter McDonald had 49s.

Bentworth’s Craig McDonald was second on his team with a 43. Wyatt Schnyder closed with a 45 and Corbin McMurray a 47. The Bearcats’ Sam Wade had a 48.

Ben Vojacek and Craig McDonald each shot a five on their playoff hole. Wade’s two-stroke advantage over Dom Capan put Bentworth ahead by two in the playoff.

Schnyder and Hunter McDonald each carded a five before Wolpink’s three-stroke edger over Adam Vojacek put the match away for the Bearcats.

Connellsville 210, Albert Gallatin 240 — The Falcons’ Hunter Konieczny and Michael Roscart shared medalist honors with a 40 to help the home team to a Section 2-3A victory at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.

Connellsville’s Nicky Farrell carded a 41 and Toby Soltis came in at 43. Wade Bryner fired a 46.

The Colonials (2-9, 3-9) were led by Clay Smith’s 43. Teammate Tyler Felio had a 45 and Garrett Snyder 48. Colton Chipps (51) and Cami Williams (53) closed the scoring for the visitors.

The Falcons improved to 5-5 in the section and 5-8 overall.

Waynesburg Central 202, Carmichaels 219 — The Raiders are two victories away from a perfect regular season after defeating the Mikes in Section 3-2A play at Carmichaels Golf Course.

Waynesburg’s Cole Headlee was 2-over-par with a 39. He birdied the par-four No. 4 hole. Teammate Jarett Tretnik fired a 40 with a birdie on the fifth hole (par four).

The Raiders’ Lucas Slifko, Matt Eisiminger, Austin Surber and Rykan Gustafson all shot a 41.

The Mikes’ Connor Lapana led his team with a 40, which included a birdie on No. 7 (par five). Carmichaels’ Anthony Post had birdies on the fourth (par four) and ninth (par five) holes to finish at 42.

Jayden Kerley (44), Cooper Richards (46) and Eli Hastings (47) closed the scoring for the Mikes (7-4, 7-5).

Waynesburg improved to 10-0 in the section and 11-0 overall.

Charleroi 200, Frazier 223 — Levi Large and Jackson Keranko led the Cougars to a Section 8-2A victory over the Commodores at Linden Hall.

Large had the low score with a 36 and Keranko shot a 38. Teammates Jake Corrin (40), Blake Koteles (42) and Ethan Hartley (44) rounded out the scoring.

The Commodores were led by Eli Cernuska and Mason Ritz, who each shot a 40. John Sinchar had a 43 and Logan Solomon fired 49. Caden Biddle finished with a 51.

Girls golf

Belle Vernon 222, Geibel Catholic 245 — The Leopards earned a Section 1-2A victory at Linden Hall.

Belle Vernon’s Sydney Stark earned medalist honors with a 45. Teammate Ava Dudzinski shot a 52 and Kara O’Neill had a 59. Jaylie Bell’s 66 closed the scoring for the Lady Leopards.

Emma Larkin’s 52 paced the Lady Gators. Paige Dolan and Olivia Pletcher carded 60s. Nolace Petrosky’s 73 closed the scoring for the home team.

Girls soccer

Connellsville 1, Baldwin 0 — Riley Leasher scored with 10 seconds remaining in regular time, as the Lady Falcons edged the Lady Highlanders in Section 2-4A play at Connellsville Stadium.

Connellsville’s Sara Tinkey made six saves for the clean sheet.

Baldwin’s Maddie Giles stopped four shots.

The Lady Falcons improved to 1-2-0 in section play and 3-3-1 overall.

The Lady Highlanders dropped to 0-3-0 and 0-5-1.

Waynesburg Central 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 — The Lady Raiders’ Kolbi and Rylie Rastoka set each other up for goals in a Section 2-1A match at Waynesburg Stadium.

Peyton Cowell earned the clean sheet, as Waynesburg improved to 2-1-0 in the section and 5-1-0 overall.

The Lady Buccaneers dropped to 1-1-1 in section play and 3-1-1 overall.

South Fayette 4, Laurel Highlands 0 — The Lady Mustangs battled the two-time WPIAL champions tough-and-nail, but the Lady Lions were able to earn the victory in Section 3-3A play at South Fayette High School.

Freshman Silvanna Rossi’s brace and goals by Nora Davidovich and Gabby Beinecke helped South Fayette improve to 3-0-0 in section play and 5-1-1 overall.

Mia Deramo had two assists for the home team. Paige Dekelwa and Stella Medvec also set-up their teammates.

Lady Lions keeper Caitlyn Thompson made five saves for the clean sheet. Thompson, a senior who is committed to Miami University (Ohio), played for the Pittsburgh Riveters this summer, and started in the team’s playoff match.

South Fayette put 29 shots on target, but Laurel Highlands keeper Addison Stroko stopped 25.

The Lady Mustangs’ Ella Doman and Taylor Irwin had two shots on goal, and Camryn McClean also had a shot on target that Thompson turned away.

Molly Nairn, Lola Mitchell, Morgan Ferris, Brooklyn Lecorchick and Adrianna Walker anchored Laurel Highlands’ backline against one of the top teams in the WPIAL.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 0 — The youthful Lady Red Raiders gave the Lady Jaguars a battle in dropping a Section 3-3A match at Bill Power Stadium.

Thomas Jefferson (3-0-0, 5-2-0) scored two goals in the first eight minutes and had a 3-0 halftime lead. The visitors added four tallies in the second half.

Uniontown keeper Kendal Nehls made 13 saves.

The Lady Red Raiders (0-3-0, 0-6-0) put three shots on target, but Lady Jaguars keeper Ali King controlled them all for the clean sheet.

Uniontown’s Sarah White put a free kick on target from 33 yards out in the final minutes of the match, but King was able to deflect it just over the bar.

Aubrey Little, Samantha Maglicco and Chloe O’Hare had two goals apiece. TJ had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, and scored a goal off a corner in the second half.

Belle Vernon 1, Keystone Oaks 0 — The Lady Leopards scored off a corner kick in a Section 1-2A victory over the Lady Eagles at Dormont Memorial Stadium.

Kelsey Roskovich’s corner was corralled by Courtney Martin and put in the back of the net for the match’s lone goal.

Belle Vernon’s Rory Bastedo made nine saves for the clean sheet, including two above-average stops in the final minute. The Lady Leopards had a 21-12 advantage in shots.

Belle Vernon improved to 3-1-1 in the section and 5-1-1 overall.

Keystone Oaks dropped to 3-1-0 and 4-5-0.

Beth-Center 8, California 2 — Kendall Welsh recorded a hat trick and added an assist in the Lady Bulldogs’ Section 2-1A win over the Lady Trojans at California.

Beth-Center improved to 1-2-0 in the section and 4-2-0 overall.

California dropped to 0-3-0 in the section and 1-3-0 overall.

Mount Pleasant 11, East Allegheny 0 — The Lady Vikings scored early and often in a Section 2-4A triumph over the Lady Wildcats at Vikings Stadium.

Mount Pleasant’s Sophia Coppola, Emma Hatcher and Carlee Pfeifer scored two goals apiece. The Lady Vikings’ Izzy Overly opened the scoring, as the home team had a 5-0 lead at the half.

Rachel Everly, Caitlyn Fullman, Raygan Mizikar and Tori Tepper had one goal apiece.

Laurel Rummel earned the clean sheet, as Mount Pleasant improved to 3-0-0 in the section and 5-1-1 overall.

Bentworth 4, Brownsville 0 — The Lady Bearcats blanked the Lady Falcons at Redstone Field in Republic to remain atop the Section 2-1A standings.

Bella Moyer had a hat trick for Bentworth (3-0-0, 5-1-1), as the visitors had a 2-0 halftime lead. Medelyn Johns added a goal.

Julia Brandau kept the sheet clean.

“It was a great game,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “We had a quick start to make it 2-0 at halftime. We are battling some knocks and sickness just like everyone else this time of year. We had to use our depth more tonight, but different people keep stepping up.

“Bella Moyer had three big goals and Joa Johns stepped in as a starter tonight and was a big part in helping us to create opportunities and goals.”

Brownsville dropped to 1-1-1 in section play and 5-2-1 overall.
