Syner, Murtha lead Uniontown to section sweep

Uniontown’s Ethan Syner and Charley Murtha topped the field in leading the Red Raiders and the Lady Red Raiders to a Division I, Section 2 sweep over McKeesport and West Mifflin on Tuesday at White Oak Park in McKeesport.
Uniontown defeated both squads, 15-50, to improve to 2-0 in section action. Albert Gallatin and Connellsville were also running, but didn’t factor into the scoring. The Colonials and Falcons will have their official race with the Red Raiders later in the season. Connellsville swept the Tigers and Titans, 15-50.
Syner, a senior, battled Falcon freshman Ellic Pritts through the course that will be the site of the WPIAL championship meet in late October to cross the finish line in the boys race at 16:54. Pritts came in at 17:06, as the duo separated themselves from the pack.
Connellsville’s Jake Pritts finished third in 18:01 before Uniontown had four runners finish within 34 seconds of each other.
Logan Davis led the pack in 18:34 to finish fourth. He was followed by teammates Matthew Page (5th/18:57), Ezra Batovsky (6th/19:05) and Donte Rugola (7th/19:08).
McKeesport’s Jack Hrinda (19:11) edged Albert Gallatin’s Brock Mace (19:13) for eighth place. The Red Raiders’ Stephen Chapley rounded out the top 10 in 19:06.
Murtha, a sophomore, crossed the finish line in the girls race with a time of 20:52. The Lady Falcons’ Addison Lane was second in 21:17.
Uniontown’s Hannah Foster and Arrington Scott were third and fourth, as Foster finished in 21:28 and Scott in 22:06. Connellsville’s Abigail Zavatchan was fifth in 22:10.
The Lady Red Raiders’ Paisley Murtha (22:30) and Kiley Abbott (22:53) were sixth and seventh. The Lady Falcons’ Trinity Moore was eighth in 23:41.
Uniontown’s Sadie Hostetler (24:09) and Finleigh O’Brien (24:17) were ninth and tenth.
The Lady Colonials’ Ashley Comaty was 12th in 25:01.
Girls: Thomas Jefferson 24, Laurel Highlands 35; Elizabeth Forward 25, Laurel Highlands 34 — The Fillies’ Isabella Baker won the individual race in 20:56, but the Lady Jaguars and Lady Warriors earned team victories in Division 1, Section 2 action at Round Hill.
Laurel Highlands’ Hannah Hertlein was 10th in 23:41 and Alexis Gallick was 16th in 26:09.
Ringgold also competed in the meet, but didn’t officially race against the Fillies.
Boys: Laurel Highlands 19, Elizabeth Forward 36; Thomas Jefferson 15, Laurel Highlands 46 — The Mustangs split a Division I, Section 2 meet in a win over the Warriors but a setback to the Jaguars at Round Hill.
Ryan Filcheck paced Laurel Highlands with an eighth-place overall finish in 18:21. Noah Hudock was 10th in 18:28 and Mason Mahoney finished 17th in 19:54.
Wil Skowronksi (20:06) and Casey Duncan (20:29) rounded out the Mustangs’ top five.
Ringgold also competed in the meet, but didn’t officially race against the Mustangs.
Raiders’ Maxwell wins Division II, Section 3 meet — Waynesburg Central’s Will Maxwell raced through Washington Park to win a meet with Chartiers-Houston, Seton LaSalle, Washington and West Greene.
Maxwell completed the course in a time of 18:30.
The Pioneers had five runners in the top 15, as Joel and Jackson Grimes were second and third, and Kameron Hackney took seventh.
Landen Hill was 13th and Levi Yeater 15th.
The Rebels had seven in the top 15 and improved to 4-0 in section play. West Greene is 3-1 in the section and Waynesburg sits at 2-2.
Lady Pioneers’ Hackney tops field in girls race — West Greene’s Eryka Hackney topped the field in 23:34.
Teammates Kenzlee Hill (12th), Norah Henderson (13th) and Ella Courtwright (15th) put four Lady Pioneers in the top 15.
Waynesburg Central’s Riley Shultz was fourth. The Lady Raiders’ Kiley Bledso was 14th.
Chartiers-Houston improved to 4-0 in the section. Waynesburg and West Greene are 0-1 in section play.
Girls: Belle Vernon 15, California 50; Belle Vernon 15, East Allegheny 50; Boys: Belle Vernon 25, California 34; Belle Vernon 18, East Allegheny 49 — Leo Soto earned the win in the boys race and Brooklyn Steeber crossed the finish line first in the girls race.
Both teams improved to 2-0 in section play.
Boys soccer
Uniontown 4, Preston, W.Va. 2 — Carson Soloist’s brace helped lead the Red Raiders to a non-section victory over Preston, W.Va.
Nick Smith scored his first career goal for Uniontown (2-4-0). Josh Paris added a goal and Braylon Woods assisted on three of the Red Raiders’ tallies.
Noah Holland and freshman Lucas Mihalko combined to make nine saves for the visitors.
Uniontown was able to play members of its junior varsity squad to gain varsity experience.
Trinity 1, Laurel Highlands 0 — Nathan Jones scored the game-winning goal in the second half of a Section 2-3A match at Trinity.
The Hillers improved to 4-0-0 in the section and are 4-1-0 overall.
The Mustangs dropped to 2-2-0 in section play and 4-2-0 overall.
Woodland Hills 2, Connellsville 1 — Tyler Burkas scored for the Falcons in a Section 2-4A setback at Connellsville Stadium.
Carson Colborn assisted on Burkas’ goal.
The Falcons are 0-2-0 in the section and 2-5-1 overall.
Belle Vernon 1, Franklin Regional 0 — Landon Bell’s goal in the second overtime lifted the host Leopards to a Section 3-3A win over the Panthers.
The win puts Belle Vernon (3-1, 4-4-1) alone in first place with Franklin Regional (2-1, 5-1) dropping into second.
Jesse Sobczak assisted on Bell’s game-winning goal. Morgan Bunch made 14 saves for the Leopards.
Mount Pleasant 5, Greensburg Salem 0 — Tyke Snyder and Grant Zahrobsky both scored a pair of goals in the Vikings’ Section 4-2A win over the visiting Lions to remain in a first-place tie with Charleroi.
Austyn Gross had the other goal for Mount Pleasant (4-0, 5-1) which got assists from Bryson Bankosh and Gavin Rummel. Grayson Gardner recorded the shutout.
Bethel Park 8, Albert Gallatin 0 — Rowan Darr had two goals for the Black Hawks (3-0-1, 3-1-1) in a Section 2-3A win over the visiting Colonials (0-4, 1-5).
Charleroi 16, Brownsville 1 — Dylan Klinger scored five goals and added three assists in the Cougars’ Section 4-2A victory over the visiting Falcons (0-4, 1-6).
Blake Pendo and Otis McIntyre both had a hat trick and three assists for Charleroi (4-0, 5-1) which also got two goals and three assists from Logan Bascus.
Southmoreland 5, Waynesburg Central 2 — Hunter Ryan scored two goals as the host Scotties triumphed over the Raiders (1-2-1, 1-3-1) in a Section 4-2A match.
Reed Pollard, Ben Schaeffer and Jack Smith each had one goal for Southmoreland (2-1, 3-3).
Bentworth 19, California 0 — Adam Moessner scored four goals and the host Bearcats built a 17-0 halftime lead on their way to a Section 2-A win over the Trojans.
Ryan Moessner added three goals and Andrew Humbertson contributed two as 13 different players scored for Bentworth (3-0, 6-0). California falls to 0-2 overall and in the section.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highlands 3, Belle Vernon 0 — The Mustangs earned a sweep over the Lady Leopards in Section 3-3A play at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium.
Laurel Highlands won by set scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-16.
Sara Reed had 20 assists, two kills and two digs for the Mustangs. Teammate Lucy Baker had eight kills, five digs, three assists and two aces. Addie Ciez chipped in with five kills, four assists, one ace and one dig.
Laurel Highlands’ Diondra Brown had seven kills, four blocks, two digs and an assist. Esther Waqanivalu added four blocks, three aces, one dig and a kill. Harlie Didra had five digs and kills, two blocks and an ace.
Ringgold 3, Albert Gallatin 0 — The host Lady Rams defeated the Lady Colonials in a Section 3-3A match. Scores were 25-19, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-17.
Gabby Penrose had 10 kills and five digs, Gabby DeLorenzo had 14 digs and an ace, and Riylee Able had 15 assists, six digs and two aces for Albert Gallatin. Mikayla Shea and Ellie Seese each contributed five kills, Lily Mick and Jenna Myers added seven and six digs, respectively, and Paityn Goletz totaled four kills, two blocks, two digs, one assist and one ace.
Brownsville 3, Charleroi 0 — Skyler Gates rang up 18 kills and three blocks as the Lady Falcons remained unbeaten with a Section 3-2A victory of the host Lady Cougars (0-3, 0-4).
Scores were 25-6, 25-18 and 25-20.
Kenzie Adams totaled 16 assists and 11 service points, and Ari Johnson added 18 service points for Brownsville (3-0, 6-0) which also got 13 digs from Ashley Evanchak.
Frazier 3, Geibel Catholic 0 — The Lady Commodores turned up for their upcoming Endless Summer Tournament in Virginia Beach with a sweep of the visiting Lady Gators (0-1, 1-6) in a Section 4-A match.
Maddie Salisbury led the way for Frazier (2-0, 4-1) with 12 kills and Morgan Fisher added nine kills and 12 assists. The Lady Commodores also got 16 assists from Allie Monack, 15 service points from Lola Marish and six digs from Addison Hiles.
Beth-Center 3, Mapletown 0 — The Lady Bulldogs swept a Section 3-A match at Mapletown by scores of 25-23, 25-8 and 25-16.
Trestle Weston led the Lady Maples with seven kills and five digs, and Rowan Eisiminger had six kills, five digs and two aces. Mapletown also got 10 assists, seven digs and three aces from Marley Shiflett, six digs from Makenna Lospeich and five digs and three aces from Leona Liggett.
Girls tennis
Mount Pleasant 5, Southmoreland 0 — The Lady Vikings won all five matches in defeating the Lady Scotties in a Section 1-2A matchup.
Singles winners for Mount Pleasant were Megan Bullock, Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma and Bella Fullman. Doubles winners were Ryleigh Drzal and Danican Tranier and Hannah Shawley and Sam Walter.
Boys golf
Carmichaels 210, McGuffey 215 — Eli Hastings shot an even-par 35 to earn medalist honors in the Mikes’ Section 3-2A victory over the host Highlanders at Dogwood Hills.
Connor Lapana was next in line for Carmichaels (6-4, 8-5) with a 39 and was followed by Anthony Post (41), Chase Ankrom (43) and Jayden Kerley (52).
Josh Rusmisel paced McGuffey with a 38. Rounding out the scoring for the Highlanders were Landon Hatfield (40), Logan Hughes (42), Noah Sibert (46) and Dominic Amos (49).
Bentworth 218, Beth-Center 234 — Wyatt Snyder shot a 4-over-par 39 in the Bearcats’ Section 3-2A win over the Bulldogs at Chippewa Golf Course.
Trent Wolpink shot a 43 for Bentworth (2-9, 3-10). Sam Wade and Craig McDonald both had a 45 and Jeremy Bland shot 46.
Parker Amos topped Beth-Center (1-11, 1-12) with a 41. Austin Kurowski carded a 46 and was followed by Evan Lowman (47), Jacob Nopwaskey (48) and Ryan Krosko (52).
Laurel Highlands 198, Ringgold 218 — Dan O’Neal fired a 1-under-par 35 as the Mustangs defeated the host Rams in a Section 2-3A match.
Damon Revak shot a 39 for Laurel Highlands (7-3, 7-4) which also got a 40 from Sevi Vecchiolla and 42s from both Kayden Smith and Mason Cicci.
Evan Callawy led Ringgold (5-5, 5-6) with a 37. Rounding up the scoring for the Rams were Evan Anderson (42), Brady Lippert (43), Trevor Benson (48) and Dylan Bartkus (48).
