Belle Vernon’s Edwards finishes 27th in WPIAL Class 3A golf final

The course at Butler Country Club wasn’t kind to Belle Vernon senior Jack Edwards in the final round of the WPIAL Class 3A individual golf championship Monday afternoon.
Edwards carded an 86 on the Par 70 course to finish in 27th place. Edwards made five putts for par, but he was hindered by double bogeys on the 5th, 10th and 15th holes.
The WPIAL championship in Class 3A began last Monday with the first round at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.
Edwards shot an even-par at Willowbrook and entered the final round in a tie for fifth place.
The Leopards have qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A team championships, which begin on Oct. 7 at Duck Hollow Golf Club at 9 a.m. The top three teams in the opening round will qualify for the team finals on Oct. 9 at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course. The final round is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Defending state champion Carson Kittsley won his first WPIAL title with a two-day score of 8-under par. He shot 6-under at Willowbrook and 2-under on Monday.
Kittsley, a junior, came through at 7-under on the front nine, as he shot a 5 on the seventh hole for a bogey, but he sank three consecutive birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes and played bogey-free to win the championship by six strokes over Latrobe’s Jack Sacriponte. West Allegheny’s Nico Ward was third after shooting even-par over 36 holes.
The top 14 finishers will compete in the PIAA Class 3A individual golf championships on Oct. 20-21 at Penn State University’s Blue Course.
The following 11 golfers qualified Monday for the state tournament: Max Fottura (Kiski Area); Ty Hartman (Thomas Jefferson); Ravi Desai (North Allegheny); Bailey Donahue (Central Catholic); Brady Newman (South Fayette); Mike Pifer (Pine-Richland); Sam Bishop (South Fayette); Colin Ward (North Allegheny); Brady Jankowski (Kiski Area); and Joey Boff (Bethel Park).
