LH freshman Morgan throws 2-hit shutout in victory over Colonials
Freshman Ramaree Morgan threw a two-hit shutout and Laurel Highlands scored twice in the sixth inning, which turned out to be the final frame due to inclement weather in the area, for a 2-0 victory over Albert Gallatin on Tuesday in Section 2-4A baseball play at Laurel Highlands High School.
With the win, the Mustangs (2-4, 3-7) swept the season series over the Colonials (0-8, 1-9) after earning an 8-7 win on Monday at German-Masontown Park in a contest they were trailing by four entering the seventh inning.
“I’m so proud of our kids for staying with it and doing enough to win when runs were so hard to come by,” Laurel Highlands coach Mike Smith said. “I challenged them before the AG series that we had to win both games to keep our playoff hopes alive and they rose to the occasion.”
Following Laurel Highlands’ two-run sixth, Albert Gallatin’s Kayden Perez was ready to bat in the seventh, but lightning in the area, coupled with rain, forced several delays until the umpire called the game.
Per National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules, a baseball game that is scheduled for seven innings is deemed official once four innings have been completed.
The conclusion halted the Colonials from attempting to force extra innings or win the game, and the visitors had their cleanup hitter up to the plate. Perez had one of Albert Gallatin’s two hits.
Morgan struck out six and walked four in six innings. He threw 71 pitches (41 strikes).
The Colonials’ Billy Craig was tagged with the loss, but the Albert Gallatin starter was solid in yielding two earned runs on five hits over six frames. He recorded six strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter in throwing 71 pitches (52 strikes).
Mustang senior first baseman Sevi Vecchiolla caused some headaches for Craig in going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Laurel Highlands scored its two runs on two hits and benefited from a hit-by-pitch.
Aiden Milsom got the Mustangs going in the sixth with a one-out singled to center field. He advanced to second base on a passed ball and stole third before Nick Crouch was hit-by-pitch to put runners at the corners.
Milsom scored the winning run when Morgan reached first on a fielder’s choice. Crouch advanced to second on the play before moving to third on a wild pitch.
Crouch scored on Vecchiolla’s single to left field for a 2-0 lead. Vecchiolla’s double came with two outs in the fourth, but Craig was able to buckle down and end the inning with a strikeout.
Morgan walked Evan Weakland to lead off the first inning, but came back with a strikeout and induced an inning-ending double play that was turned by Vecchiolla, as he recorded the unassisted out at first base before firing to Noah Lion for the third out.
Craig induced a double play in the second when shortstop Clay Smith recorded the second and third outs to end the frame.
The Colonials’ Colton Chipps doubled to right field with one out in the third, but Morgan struck out the next two batters to keep the contest scoreless.
“I was worried about a letdown after the comeback win on Monday, scoring five runs in the seventh, but they gutted out another victory,” Smith said. “I couldn’t be happier for our boys. We want to keep it going next week.”
Lion and Andrew Irwin each one single apiece for the home team.
