California to host WPIAL track & field semifinal
California won the girls Section 6-2A track & field championship, while the boys at California were second in the section.
The Trojans were awarded for their success in hosting one of the semifinal sites for the team championships on Tuesday.
On the girls side, Fort Cherry (8-0), Greensburg Central Catholic (6-1), Laurel (7-0), Shady Side Academy (5-1) and California (7-0) will compete at Trojan Stadium for the opportunity to advance to the WPIAL finals in Class 2A on May 5 at Confluence Financial Partners Stadium on the campus of Peters Township Middle School. The championship meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
In boys action, the Section 6-2A runner-up California (6-1) will face Fort Cherry (6-2), Greensburg Central Catholic (7-0), Ligonier Valley (6-2), Mohawk (8-1) and Shady Side Academy (5-1).
The action in Coal Center, and all other sites in the championships with the exception of Quaker Valley (3:30 p.m. start), is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Brownsville (5-2) qualified for the team championships on the girls side in Class 2A. The Falcons will compete at Quaker Valley (6-0) against Chartiers-Houston (7-1), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (7-0) or OLSH, The Neighborhood Academy (7-1) and the hosts.
Southmoreland (9-0) and Waynesburg Central (5-2) are at South Park. Bentworth (5-2), Burrell (6-1) and Winchester Thurston (8-0) will also compete at the home of the Eagles in Class 2A girls.
The Raiders (7-0) won Section 6-2A over the Trojans.
Waynesburg will compete at South Park with Mount Pleasant (5-2), Southmoreland (7-2), Riverview (7-0) and the Eagles (8-0) in Class 2A boys.
In Class 3A, Uniontown qualified after placing second in Section 2-3A behind Ringgold (6-0). The Red Raiders (6-1) are at Baldwin in the semifinals. The Highlanders (5-1), Canon-McMillan (6-0) and Norwin (6-0) will also compete for the right to compete in the Class 3A boys team championship at West Mifflin on May 5 with a 3 p.m. start.
On the girls side in Class 3A, Belle Vernon (4-2), Connellsville (4-2) and Laurel Highlands (5-2) all qualified out of Section 2-3A.
The Lady Leopards are at North Allegheny, and will face Chartiers Valley (5-1), Kiski Area (6-0), the Lady Tigers (6-0) and Plum (5-1).
The Lady Falcons will head to Baldwin to meet Norwin (5-1), South Fayette (6-0) and Upper St. Clair (5-1).
The Mustangs will travel to Hempfield and face the Lady Spartans (6-0), Franklin Regional (6-0) and Ringgold (5-1).
The WPIAL team championships will be the final team event for the track & field season. The WPIAL individual championships will be contested on May 13 at Slippery Rock University. The state meet is set for May 22 and 23 at Shippensburg University.
