Leopards’ Kent shines at Scott Frederick Mid Mon Track Classic

By Jonathan Guth 3 min read

Belle Vernon’s Ryan Kent continued his strong season with a sweep of the throwing events on Monday in the Scott Frederick Mid Mon Track Classic at Ringgold High School’s Joe Montana Stadium.

Kent, a senior who has committed to Shippensburg University to continue his academic and track & field careers, won the discus, javelin and shot put.

Kent didn’t set any PRs (personal records) or season-best throws, but won the discus with a toss of 168-06, let the javelin fly 157-07 and had the shot put land 54-06 from his release.

The Leopards’ Brooklyn Steeber broke her PR in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs with winning times of 2:28.49 and 5:23.45. The sophomore’s previous PRs in both events were 2:31.21 and 5:27.08.

Teammate Lily Walsh assured a Belle Vernon sweep in the girls distance events with a triumph in the 3,200. Walsh crossed the finish line in 12:32.53.

Bella Tatar provided the Leopards with a champion in the girls 400-meter dash in a PR of 1:02.91. Tatar’s previous PR was 1:03.37.

Gia Dusi proved to her older sister, Gabby Dusi, that she is pretty athletic herself in winning the pole vault with a PR of 9-07. Dusi, a ninth grader, had a previous best of 9-00.

Gabby Dusi, who has won three WPIAL titles and was the state runner-up in Class 2A tennis singles as a junior and senior for Belle Vernon, has committed to Duquesne University to continue her academic and tennis careers, but it wouldn’t be surprising if her younger sister joined her in competing at the collegiate level.

Brownsville sophomore Aijanae Foster won the girls high jump with a season-best mark of 5-04. Foster, who has a PR of 5-06.50, is ranked No. 10 in the state in the event. She won the 100 hurdles in 15.88.

The Falcons’ Alexa Lewandowsky won the girls discus with a throw of 106-08.

Beth-Center’s Deakyn DeHoet won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.11. DeHoet, a senior, is a student at Jefferson-Morgan, but competes for the Bulldogs as part of a co-op, as the Rockets don’t field a track & field team.

Teammate Brandon Remington won the boys 3,200 in a time of 11:08.42. Remington set a season-best time in the event.

California’s Carter Kent raced twice around the track to win the boys 800 in a time of 2:06.17. The junior has a PR of 2:00.05 in the mid-distance race.

The Trojans’ Quinn Barbero shattered his PR in the pole vault after clearing the bar for a winning jump of 12-00. The junior’s previous best was 10-04.

California’s Morgan Ross won the girls long jump after soaring 15-03.50. The senior has a PR of 15-11.50 in the event.
