Rob Burchianti | Herald-Standard Connellsville’s Braydon Rockwell putts on the 18th green during the second round of the C. Harper Fayette Open on Aug. 1 at Duck Hollow Golf Club. Rockwell, a freshman at Connellsville, competed Thursday in his first varsity golf match, as the Falcons dropped a non-section match to Mount Pleasant at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.

Austyn Gross and Hunter Snyder put Mount Pleasant in a good position to begin Thursday’s non-section boys golf match against Connellsville at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.

Gross shot a four-over-par 39 on the front nine at the Bullskin Township course, and Snyder followed with a 40, as the Vikings had a three-shot lead after the first two starters from both teams finished their rounds.

Mount Pleasant carried the momentum en route to a 214-217 victory in the season opener for both squads.

The Falcons’ Braydon Rockwell carded a 43 in his first official varsity match as a ninth grader, and teammate Wade Bryner fired a 39 to share medalist honors with Gross.

Connellsville pulled within one stroke of the Vikings after the third starters completed their rounds, as Owen Show (44) bested Trever Gonofsky (46) by two strokes.

Quinn Painter’s 44 restored the visitors’ three-stroke advantage, as the Falcons’ Santo Crucio finished at 46.

Connellsville’s Hunter Hughes and Mount Pleasant’s Ezra Bowman finished their nine holes after carding a 45.

The Falcons return to action on Monday in section play against Laurel Highlands at South Union Township Municipal Golf Course. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
