Laurel Highlands golfers remain undefeated following win over TJ
Laurel Highlands had a rare off day from competition the day before Thursday’s Section 2-3A showdown with Thomas Jefferson.
Mustangs head coach Mike Revak had his team use the break from match play to work on their game, which must have helped, as Laurel Highlands earned a 195-200 victory over the Jaguars in a battle of unbeatens at South Union Township Municipal Golf Course.
The Mustangs improved to 5-0 in section and overall play. Thomas Jefferson fell to 2-1 in the section and 4-2 overall.
LH will finish out the first half of section play on Sept. 3 against Elizabeth Forward at Youghiogheny Country Club. The Warriors have yet to play the Jaguars, but the two will meet on Sept. 1 in the first of two matches.
“Everybody stepped up and worked hard on the range before coming up and doing some work on the putting green,” Revak said. “They also focused on improving their game inside 120 yards. We are happy with the result, but we know there is still a lot of golf to be played. We will be playing Thomas Jefferson later at their course, which will be another challenge.”
Laurel Highlands shot its best nine-hole score this season against the Jaguars, as four of its five starters broke 40 on the par 36 course.
Senior Kayden Smith birdied his first hole and parred six of his remaining eight holes to finish as medalist with a 37.
Damon Revak continued his strong play this week after earning medalist honors against Uniontown on Tuesday. The Mustang sophomore birdied the third hole, and sank par putts on the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth holes in carding a 39.
Teammate Aiden Milsom recorded a birdie on the fourth hole and finished with a round of 39 playing as Laurel Highlands’ fifth starter. Milsom parred the first, second, sixth, seventh and eighth holes.
“Aiden had a big round,” Mike Revak said. “We had three guys shoot 39 today and were able to break 200 as a team.”
Dan O’Neal made par putts on the first, second, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth holes to finish at 39.
Senior Ryan Revak parred the first, fourth, fifth and eighth holes on his way to carding 41, but could have easily been at 39.
“Ryan should have had a birdie, but he had a situation where he lost two strokes and bogeyed that hole,” Mike Revak said. “It was the right ruling, but he still had a great round.”
Thomas Jefferson’s best round came from its first starter, as Nathan Thatcher made birdies on the third, fifth and ninth holes, and parred the first, second and fourth to close his round at 38.
Ryder Mulvihill and Jake Pritchard each fired a round of 40. Mulvihill birdied the par 4 fourth hole. Teammates Max Jones and A.J. Weidmann closed the Jaguars’ scoring with each shooting a 41. Weidmann had a birdie putt on the par 4 seventh hole.
