Mount Pleasant edges LH in section showdown
Mount Pleasant built up a 10-point lead through the first three quarters, and held off a late charge from Laurel Highlands to earn a Section 3-4A victory in girls basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Mount Pleasant Area Junior/Senior High School.
Ryleigh Drzal led the home team and the contest in scoring with 15 points. Taylor Schwertfeger paced the visitors with 13 points.
The Lady Vikings improved to 6-6 in the section and 9-10 overall. The Lady Mustangs dropped to 4-8 in section play and 6-14 overall.
Mount Pleasant is in fourth place in the section and Laurel Highlands is in sixth. The top five teams will qualify for the WPIAL playoffs.
The Lady Mustangs have remaining section games at Ringgold (5-6) on Monday and home against Yough (2-10) on Thursday. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. LH defeated the Lady Rams, 54-42, in the first meeting.
The Lady Vikings would win a tiebreaker over Laurel Highlands if the two teams tied due to Mount Pleasant winning the season series, 2-0.
Ringgold hosts South Park (9-2) on Wednesday and are at Mount Pleasant on Thursday.
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 46, SETON LASALLE 41 — The Lady Raiders handed the Lady Rebels their first Section 3-3A loss this season in a victory at Waynesburg Central High School thanks to a huge third quarter.
Waynesburg (8-2, 16-2) trailed 26-17 at halftime, but outscored the visitors, 20-6, in the third period for a 37-32 lead heading into the fourth period. The Lady Raiders played Seton LaSalle (9-1, 12-7) even in the final frame.
Waynesburg’s Emma Blair had a game-high 17. Teammates Peyton Cowell added 16.
