Colonial wrestlers top Raiders

Albert Gallatin won four matches by fall in a 53-18 victory over Waynesburg Central in non-section action on Wednesday at Albert Gallatin High School.

Greyson Morris (114), Bryce Kelley (127), Reese Williams (133) and Colin Rockwell (285) recorded 24 team points for the Colonials (13-6).

Julius Poole earned a 19-4 technical fall in 5:49 at 139 to produce team points for the home team.

The Raiders’ Floyd Huff won by fall in 4:23 at 121. Teammates Cole Phillips (152) and Roan Tustin (285) received forfeits.

Albert Gallatin’s Gavin Morris (107), Kage Churby (160), Nick Hillyard (172) and Roman Smith (189) won by forfeit.

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 47, WEST GREENE 22 — The Rockets defeated their Greene County neighbors in non-section action at Jefferson-Morgan Junior/Senior High School.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Brayden Hanning (114), Caleb Dulaney (121) and James Dulaney (139) pinned their opponents. The Rockets’ Alek Palko (160) and Geno Orlandi (172) won by technical fall.

Payton Bastian (189) won by major decision, 16-6, for Jefferson-Morgan (17-2). Teammate E.J. Lingenfield earned a 2-0 decision over Jacob Orndoff at 152.

The Rockets’ Austin Grandel (107) and Carson Sweeney (127) received forfeits.

The Pioneers’ Noah Collins (133) and Joel Rizor (145) won by fall.

Colin Whyte recorded a 12-0 major decision for West Greene (5-7) at 285. The Pioneers’ Charlie Stoneking won by forfeit at 215.

SOUTH PARK 50, BROWNSVILLE 18 — The Falcons’ Kody Gates won by fall, but the Eagles were too much in a non-section dual meet at Brownsville Area High School.

Brownsville’s Jeff Smuzinick (215) and Cooper Cetera (285) each won by forfeit.

South Park’s Jacob Guzek (121) and Benjamin Ference (127) pinned their opponents, and teammate Camden Barkey won by technical fall, 20-2, in 3:44 at 172. The Eagles’ Karl Reilly earned a 14-8 decision at 139.

South Park’s Zach Gigliotti (107), Travis Kirk (133), Noah Weisbrod (152), Marshall Kirk (160) and Brayden Bucci (189) won by forfeit.

In girls action, the Lady Eagles earned a 12-6 victory, as Drea Stone (118) and Anna Duncan (130) won by forfeit.

The Lady Falcons’ Alexa Lewandosky received a forfeit at 155.

BOYS BASKETBALL

BALDWIN 62, UNIONTOWN 45 — The Red Raiders pulled within eight of the Highlanders heading into the fourth quarter, but the visitors outscored the home team by nine points in the final frame for a non-section triumph at A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Uniontown Area High School.

Uniontown (6-7, 10-11) trailed 38-25 at halftime, but had a 14-9 advantage in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 47-39. Baldwin (11-9) won the fourth quarter, 15-6.

The visitors had an 18-12 lead after the first quarter, and won the second, 20-13.

The Highlanders’ Evan Golash led the game in scoring with 21 points. Teammates Sadiq Anderson (13) and Max Marzina (13) were in double figures.

Isaac Ellsworth led the Red Raiders in scoring with 17 points. Payden Fitzgerald chipped in with 14 for the home team

Uniontown ends its regular season tonight at Franklin Regional (8-5, 12-8). The Red Raiders will clinch a spot in the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs with a win. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

SOUTHMORELAND 61, LIGONIER VALLEY 45 — Four Scotties reached double figures in a Section 4-3A victory over the Rams at Ligonier Valley High School.

Brock Pritts scored a team-high 14 points for Southmoreland (9-0, 13-7). Stanley Chapman added 12, and Noah Felentzer and Luke Stinnett put-in 12 points apiece.

The Rams’ Michael Vargulish-Graver had a game-high 16 points.

The Scotties had a 22-14 lead after the first quarter. Ligonier Valley (6-3, 11-9) cut the deficit to 34-31 at halftime after a 17-12 advantage in the second period.

Southmoreland won the third quarter, 16-5, and the fourth, 11-9.

The Scotties can finish section play tonight if they defeat Brownsville. The game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m.

CALIFORNIA 74, MAPLETOWN 38 — The Trojans gradually pulled away in a non-section victory over the Maples at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School.

California had a 14-10 lead after the first quarter and a 33-19 halftime advantage. The Trojans won the third period, 21-9, and the fourth, 20-10.

California’s Weston Monticelli led the game in scoring with 22 points. Teammates Alan Dennis (15) and Chase Shemanski (11) were in double digits.

Kaleb Evosevich led Mapletown in scoring with 13 points.

NEIGHBORHOOD ACADEMY 84, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 22 — The Bulldogs jumped out early and cruised to a Section 2-1A victory over the Gators.

Neighborhood Academy (9-0, 17-2) had a 49-6 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs won the third quarter, 17-6, and the fourth, 18-10.

Neighborhood Academy’s Kedron Gilmore scored a game-high 35 points. Teammate Khi’Mir Davis put in 21.

Evan Strimmel led Geibel Catholic (3-5, 10-10) in scoring with 10 points.

The Gators are at Monessen (5-4, 9-8) this evening in section play at 7 p.m. Geibel closes the regular season on Saturday when it hosts St. Joseph (4-4, 7-11) at 5:30 p.m.

The Gators are in fifth place in the section standings, which would put them out of the WPIAL playoffs in Class 1A, but Geibel can move up to a spot in the postseason with at least one victory this weekend. The Gators can qualify as the third-place team out of the section with two victories.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 71, ALBERT GALLATIN 32 — The Lady Raiders’ Tess Pauley scored a game-high 21 points to help lead her team to a non-section victory.

Waynesburg Central’s Emma Blair had 15 points. Teammate Addonae Johnson added 11.

The Lady Colonials were led in scoring by Ellie Seese, who had 13 points.

The Lady Raiders (9-2, 18-2) had a 25-6 lead after the opening quarter and pushed their advantage at halftime to 48-18. Waynesburg had a 13-11 edge in the third period and won the fourth quarter, 10-3.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 53, UNIONTOWN 25 — The Lady Red Raiders outscored the Lady Jaguars by five in the fourth quarter, but the visitors had too much of an advantage to win a Section 4-5A contest at A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Uniontown Area High School.

Aierra Jenkins led Uniontown (2-9, 9-11) in scoring with 16 points.

Thomas Jefferson (11-0, 19-2) had leads of 11-6 after the first quarter and 29-11 at halftime. The Lady Jaguars extended their advantage to 46-13 after three periods.

The Lady Red Raiders outscored the visitors, 12-7, in the final frame.

HEMPFIELD 58, CONNELLSVILLE 24 — The Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Falcons by 26 in the second and third quarters to pull away in a Section 2-6A victory at Hempfield Area High School.

Hempfield (3-6, 13-8) had a 12-9 edge after the first quarter before using a 19-4 advantage in the second period for a 31-13 halftime lead. The home team won the third quarter, 20-9, for a 51-22 advantage heading to the fourth period. The Lady Spartans had a 7-2 edge in the final frame.

Hempfield’s Reagan Fisher scored a game-high 15 points. Teammates Ava Shipman (14) and Gabby Coccia (11) were in double figures.
