Frazier’s Erdely earns 3rd section title
Frazier’s Jonah Erdely won his third section title in as many attempts on Saturday in the Class 2A Southern Sectional at Burgettstown Middle/High School.
Erdely, a senior, earned a 7-4 decision over McGuffey’s Victor Bonus in the finals at 152 pounds. The Seton Hill commit was section gold as a freshman and junior, but was injured during his sophomore season and couldn’t compete.
The Commodores’ Derek Diamond placed third at 215.
West Greene’s Colin Whyte won his second section championship with a fall in 3:25 at 285. Whyte has passed his uncle, Shawn Whyte, for the school record in career wins with 152. Shawn, who is an assistant for the Pioneers, set the mark in 1998 with 148 victories.
Waynesburg Central’s Roan Tustin won his second section title in a 4-2 win over Canon-McMillan’s Brayden Collins in the finals at 215 during the Class 3A Southern Sectional at South Fayette High School.
The Raiders’ Floyd Huff was fourth at 121. Teammates Link Miner (133) and Lincoln Fisher (285) placed sixth, and advanced to the WPIAL Class 3A Individual Championships that are scheduled to be held this Friday and Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School.
Beth-Center had two section champions in the Class 2A Southern Sectional, as Malachi Peak (189) and Noah Layhue (215) went back-to-back. Peak earned a 7-3 decision, but Layhue won his bout in the finals by fall, and also recorded his 100th-career victory.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Brayden Hanning won by fall at 107 for the championship at Burgettstown. Teammates Caleb Dunaway (114) and Alek Palko (160) finished second.
The Rockets’ Landon Heath was third at 285. James Dulaney (5th/127) and EJ Lingenfield (6th/139) qualified for the WPIAL Class 2A Individual Championships, which are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School.
West Greene’s Noah Collins was second at 133. Collins, a senior, recently surpassed 100 career wins. He now has 105 victories.
The Pioneers’ Levi Yeater was third and 172 and Joel Rizor fourth at 145. Teammates Brice Smith (160) and Hunter Gorby (189) finished fifth, and Jacob Rizor was sixth at 114.
The Bulldogs’ Alex Medlen (121) and Mason Wright (139) were the runner-up in their respective weight classes. Teammates Brody Quigley (4th/107) and Shane Cronin (6th/127) also qualified for the district tournament.
Brownsville’s Anthony Dulaney placed fourth at 133 in the Southern Sectional to qualify for the WPIAL tournament. The Falcons’ Kody Gates was sixth at 145. Teammate Jeff Smuzinick finished sixth at 215.
Southmoreland’s Kaden Shannon lost a 6-4 decision in the finals at 285 in the Class 2A Eastern Sectional at Greensburg Salem. Shannon will represent the Scotties in the WPIAL tournament at Chartiers Valley.
Southmoreland’s Austin Pepiot (114), Nick Lubecki (127) and Hunter Ryan (160) placed third. Teammates Jonathan Perkey (152) and Peyton Bann (215) were fourth.
The Scotties’ Kolten Lewandowsky (133) and Connor Shannon (189) finished fifth, and Micah McGeary (189) and Hunter Pepiot (172) placed sixth.
Mount Pleasant was also at the Eastern Sectional, and the Vikings had four qualifiers for the WPIAL Class 2A tournament in Tristan Wtorkiewicz, Payton Schaum and Parker Holt.
Wtorkiewicz lost in the finals at 152 to Elizabeth Forward’s Lucas Boyer by decision, 4-0, while Schaum was third at 285 and Holt sixth at 121.
