J-M falls in quarterfinals of Class 2A team tourney

Jefferson-Morgan went toe-to-toe with Laurel, but bonus points were key for the Spartans in a 42-30 victory on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 2A dual meet tournament at Laurel High School.

Laurel (17-3) will face Burrell (15-2) in the semifinals on Saturday at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School.

The Rockets (16-2) will host West Greene on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. before getting ready for the individual section tournament that is scheduled for Feb. 14 at Burgettstown High School.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Caleb Dulaney opened the dual meet against the Spartans with a fall in 1:04 at 121 pounds.

Teammate Geno Orlandi recorded a technical fall, 17-2, in 5:43 at 152, and Alek Palko (160) earned a major decision, 14-2, at 160.

James Dulaney edged Jack Brest, 8-6, at 133. The Rockets’ Austin Grandel (107) and Brayden Hanning (114) won by forfeit.

Laurel’s Logan Ketzel (127), Archer Brua (139), Josh Sherman (145), Jack Miles (189) and Casey Wilson (285) won by fall.

Jefferson-Morgan downed Avella, 48-18, in the first round.

Grandel (107), Hanning (114), Caleb Dulaney (121), James Dulaney (133) and Colton Humphreys (145) pinned their opponents against the Eagles.

Orlandi (152) and Heath (285) won by forfeit.

CANON-MCMILLAN 45, BELLE VERNON 25 — The Big Macs were too much for the Leopards in a first-round dual meet during the WPIAL Class 3A team tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

Belle Vernon’s Brayden Broadwater won by fall at 114. The Leopards’ Rylee Doppelheuer earned a victory via major decision, 12-0, at 121.

Teammate Colby Hibner pulled out a 7-5 decision at 160.

Belle Vernon’s Eric Adamec (189) and Elijah Brown (215) received forfeits.

BELLE VERNON 35, MARS 29 — The Leopards advanced to the first round of the team tournament after defeating the Fightin’ Planets.

Broadwater (114), Hibner (160), Eric Granato (145) and Skylar Gush (172) pinned their opponents. Brown (215) and Gracin Guglielmo (107) earned wins via technical fall.

Doppelheuer recorded an 8-0 major decision at 121.

BETH-CENTER 42, QUAKER VALLEY 36 — The Bulldogs recorded five falls in earning a first-round victory in the WPIAL Class 2A dual meet tournament at Burrell High School.

Beth-Center (9-5) fell in the quarterfinal to Burrell, 51-19.

The Bulldogs’ Alex Medlen (121), Shane Cronin (133), Malachi Peak (215), Noah Layhue (285) and Brody Quigley (107) picked up six points apiece after pinning their opponents.

Beth-Center’s Noah McCollum (107) and Mason Wright (139) won by forfeit.
