Jonathan Guth | Herald-Standard Brownsville’s Ben Vojacek follows through on his shot during the TriCADA Golf Tournament last August at Nemacolin Country Club.

Ben Vojacek didn’t grow up with a golf club in his hands, but in four years he has proven himself to play at the next level, as the recent graduate of Brownsville Area High School has selected Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC) to continue his academic and golf careers.

Vojacek has enrolled in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) program at WCCC.

Baseball has been Vojacek’s top choice as a sport, as he has been playing for 14 years, but as he continued to progress on the links, WCCC coach Jeff Black contacted Vojacek about joining the Wolfpack.

“Coach Black reached out to me about coming out and golfing for the team late last fall,” Vojacek said. “There wasn’t any singular moment where I felt like I could play at the next level. I just got better and better every time I played, and it just came with my experience and success in the sport. I was really unsure about what I was doing until I found out that I was recruited to be on a collegiate golf team.”

Vojacek is eager to be in the HVAC program and participate on the golf team, and Black added a caveat for Vojacek.

“Their home course is the Glengarry Golf Links in Latrobe, which is a haul from my home in Grindstone, but Coach Black said I could practice at Nemacolin Country Club, which is my home course,” Vojacek said. “That was really big for me.”

Vojacek made the All-County team twice at the Fayette County Coaches Association (FCCA) tournament, and was ninth as a senior in the TriCADA Golf Tournament, which featured some of the top Class 3A golfers in the WPIAL.

Vojacek’s brother, Adam, is a member of the golf team at Brownsville, and Ben hopes he has left a strong legacy for all involved with the program.

“I am proud of my accomplishments at Brownsville,” Ben Vojacek said. “The program is in way better shape than it was when I started, and I hope to be remembered for being part of building the program.

“I would like to thank my family, friends, Coach Black, Coach (Nick) Eadie, and most importantly, God, for giving me all the opportunities I have been blessed to receive.”
