Carmichaels wins 3rd in a row after topping Charleroi
Carmichaels will enjoy its two-day rest after playing three games in three days that culminated in a 4-3 victory over Charleroi on Thursday at Camichaels in Fayette County Baseball League (FCBL) play.
The Copperheads improved to 9-2-1 and increased their lead in the FCBL standing to two games over Hopwood (8-5).
The Magicians dropped to 6-6-1 and sit in fourth place. Oakland, Md., is third at 7-7-1 and Mill Run fifth at 2-12.
Charleroi scored three runs in the top of the second inning prior to Carmichaels countering with three runs in the bottom of the third frame to tie the game at 3-3.
The Copperheads scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth when AJ Vanata doubled to center field to lead off the frame, and with two outs, was driven home by Dom Colarusso’s line-drive triple on a 3-2 count.
Ashton Ray hit a two-run double to put the Magicians on top in the second before Brad Banaszak hit a sacrifice flyout to center field.
Alex Vansickle hit a three-run home run to right field on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 3-3. Vanata and Robbie Wilson-Jones scored on Vansickle’s blast.
Gianni Cantini earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits in 5 ⅓ innings. He had nine strikeouts and walked two. Ben Shields recorded five straight outs for the save. He struck out three, forced a groundout to second base and a flyout to center field.
Colarusso and Noah Mildren had two hits apiece.
Chad and Spencer Behrendt each had two hits, including a double, for Charleroi.
Carmichaels returns to action on Sunday at Oakland. The game is scheduled to be played at Garrett College in McHenry, Md. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
