Chef Joe’s Omelet Run provides best of both worlds
While an omelet may not be the healthiest choice when it comes to breakfast, having one once a year after completing a 5K or mile run shouldn’t hinder someone’s diet.
In a race that was created by distance runner, coach and chef Joe Carei, this hybrid combines exercise and eating, which is all for a good cause, as the proceeds are split between the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children and the Uniontown cross country team.
The Chef Joe’s Omelet Run is scheduled for June 20 on the track at Uniontown Area High School’s Bill Power Stadium.
The 5K will feature a run and walk, and both races are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. They will start and finish on the track, while the rest of the race course will travel over the Sheepskin Trail.
The event also features a mile run on the track that is officially known as the “Joe Thomas Mile” to honor Uniontown’s own Joe Thomas, who was a two-time state champion in the mile and cross country. Thomas ran the mile in 4:14.9 at the Mount Lebanon Invitational his senior year in 1960, which was the third-fastest mile of any runner in United States history at the time. He won his state titles in 1959 and 1960 before becoming a national champion and All-American at Southern Illinois.
Thomas remains active in the sport, and coaches the cross country and distance track teams at Albert Gallatin.
The mile run is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., and participants in the mile can also compete in the 5K. This year’s race will feature a male and female division, and those who complete the run in the fastest times will have their names engraved on a plaque that will remain at Uniontown Area High School.
The Little Scrambler is a 400-meter race for children 12-and-under. It starts at 8:45 a.m.
A free omelet breakfast will be available to all registrants. Non-participants can partake in the breakfast for $6. Children under 10 are free.
Those interested in competing can register for the race at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Uniontown/ChefJoeSOmeletRunn or mail a registration form to Joe Everhart at 13 Marion Street, Uniontown, PA 15401. Everhart can be reached via phone at 724-439-2113. Checks need to be made payable to Uniontown Cross Country.
Pre-registration prior to June 13 will be $20 for the 5K and mile run. Those who wish to compete in both, will only need to pay once. The Little Scrambler is $10, and a price increase is not in effect.
Those wishing to register the day of the race will pay $30 for the 5K and mile run. Race-day registration will take place from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at Bill Power Stadium.
The awards and breakfast will be held in the cafeteria at Uniontown Area High School.
