Petroff hits, pitches Brownsville Legion to victory

Nash Petroff had the game-winning hit and pitched a complete game in Brownsville’s 2-1 victory over Carmichaels Post 400 in Fayette County American Legion Baseball play on Monday at Brownsville.

Petroff hit a line-drive double to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead and he yielded one earned run on three hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. He threw 95 pitches (59 strikes).

Brody Behout took the pitching loss, but had a quality outing in allowing two earned runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two in throwing 85 pitches (52 strikes).

Brownsville (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second frame when Joshua Huston scored on Johnathan Vasbinder’s line drive to center field.

Huston led off the inning with a single before Aiden Napolillo was hit-by-pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Bebout recorded a strikeout prior to Vasbinder’s single.

Carmichaels (2-3) turned a double play to end the frame without any further damage.

Petroff’s two-bagger came with two outs in the fifth to send Jonah Dillinger home. Dillinger singled on a line drive to left field on an 0-2 count to set the stage for Petroff.

The visitors scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning when Bebout scored on a groundout to second base. Conor Lapana advanced to third on the play, but Petroff struck out the next batter to end the game.

Bebout was hit-by-pitch to lead off the frame and advanced to second when Lapana walked. Bebout and Lapana moved up one base on a wild pitch before Petroff recorded a strikeout for the first out.

Jordan Davis had two hits for Carmichaels, and Bebout singled to center field in the fourth.

Brownsville’s Todd Settles singled to left field and stole second in the sixth, but Bebout induced back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 8, UNIONTOWN 2 — Thomas Jefferson Post 935 scored six runs in the sixth inning to take control in its victory over Uniontown at Thomas Jefferson.

The home team scored one run apiece in the first and third innings before adding six for an 8-0 lead. Uniontown scored two runs in the seventh.

Uniontown (2-2) had a promising start to the game when Lane Smiley walked to lead off the first inning, but a double play and flyout to right field ended the threat.

Thomas Jefferson (2-2-1) took its first lead when Nico Knight singled to right field, advanced to second on an error and scored on Justin Fry’s base hit to center field.

Uniontown had an opportunity to tie the contest in the top of the second inning when Nick Crouch reached first base safely on an error and advanced to second on Nick Fleszar’s line drive to left field with two outs, but Thomas Jefferson’s Ty Geary forced a groundout to first base to end the frame.

Geary helped himself out when his single to center field plated Matt Musial for a 2-0 advantage. Musial walked and advanced to third on an error prior to scoring.

The visitors had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fifth inning when Crouch singled to left field and advanced to second when Fleszar walked, but Geary finished his final frame when he induced a fielder’s choice that forced Fleszar out at second base before a flyout to right field ended the threat.

Geary allowed two hits in five scoreless innings. He struck out two and walked three to earn the win on the mound. Hunter Horne threw the last two innings. He yielded two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Thomas Jefferson scored six runs in the sixth on four hits and three walks. It also benefited from an error and a hit-by-pitch.

Geary led off the inning with a double to left field before advancing to third on Fry’s base hit to left field. Geary and Fry scored on Josh Chalovich’s single to right field for a 4-0 lead. Chalaovich advanced to second on the throw to the plate.

Justin Berberich, Chase Barnes and Tyler Mitrisin drew three straight walks, and courtesy runner Anthony DeMino trotted home when Mitrisin drew a base on balls for a 5-0 advantage.

Berberich and Barnes scored on Jack Sinclair’s single to left field for a seven-run lead. Cesar Padron reached first base safely on an error and Mitrisin crossed home plate when Musial was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded for an 8-0 advantage.

Noah Zawislan and Parker Hoff doubled to center and left field to begin the top of the seventh, and after one out was recorded, both scored on Crouch’s base hit to center field.
