Uniontown edges Latrobe in non-league play

Uniontown Post 51 stepped out of Fayette County American Legion action on Saturday, as it played Latrobe Jethawks Post 515 in a non-league contest.

Uniontown (4-3) scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, which turned out to also be the winning score in a 10-9 road victory.

Mike Smith singled to left field, stole second and scored on Andrew Irwin’s base hit to left field for a 10-7 lead.

Latrobe (4-1) pulled within one in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on base, but Noah Lion induced a lineout to Shane Kelly at shortstop and a popup to Evan Lion to end the game.

Cole Short reached first base safely via error for the home team to lead off the frame before scoring on Joey Razza’s triple to center field with one out. Cayden McCune walked before Razza scored on a wild pitch.

Uniontown opened the scoring in the first when Kelly walked, advanced to second on Lane Smiley’s sacrifice bunt prior to scoring on an error for a 1-0 advantage.

Latrobe plated two runs in the bottom of the first when Ty Wisniewski walked, advanced to second on an error and crossed home plate on a second miscue. Short reached first base safely on a fielder’s choice and scored on Razza’s base hit to the pitcher for a 2-1 lead.

The home team extended its cushion to 4-1 in the bottom of the third when Razza drove in Aaryn Chappel with a line-drive single to left field. Chappel had singled and stole second before sprinting home.

Uniontown tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth frame that began with Noah Lion drawing a free pass. Lion stole second, but Latrobe recorded back-to-back popups for two outs.

Lion crossed home plate on Smith’s line drive to left field, and advanced to third on Evan Lion’s double to right field. Smith and Evan Lion scored on Andrew Irwin’s base hit to center field and a brand-new game at 4-4.

Uniontown regained the lead with two runs in the fifth for a 6-4 advantage. Kelly singled, Smiley was hit-by-pitch before Kelly scored on an error.

Smiley advanced to third on Aiden Guittap’s sacrifice bunt and raced across home plate on Nick Fleszar’s line drive to left field.

Razza’s fourth RBI came in Latrobe’s half of the fifth when his base hit to left plated Chappel, who was hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on Short’s line drive to center field, and third on a double play.

Uniontown increased its cushion to 9-5 in the top of the sixth inning when it scored three runs with two outs that began on Irwin’s base hit to center field. David Luckey singled to left field before Kelly was intentionally walked.

Irwin scored when Smiley was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded prior to Noah Lion’s double to left field that plated Kelly and Smiley.

Latrobe scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two.

Reid Flynn doubled to right field and scored on Roman Simmons’ two-batter to left. Simmons advanced to third on a wild pitch and raced home on a passed ball.

SMITHFIELD-FAIRCHANCE 5, BROWNSVILLE 1 — A four-run fourth inning was enough offense for Kaiden Brady in Smithfield-Fairchance’s Fayette County American Legion victory on Friday at German-Masontown Park.

A.J. Watson opened the fourth frame for Smithfield-Fairchance (4-2-1) with a line-drive double to left field prior to scoring on Matt Malinsky’s base hit to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

Malinsky raced to second on Kayden Perez’s single, and third on a groundout before scoring on Ben Lilley’s infield single.

Perez and Lilley crossed home plate on Clay Smith’s line drive to left field for a 4-1 lead. Lilley had advanced to second on defensive indifference.

The home team added an insurance run in the fifth when Koby Lisauckis singled, but was forced out at second when Evan Weakland reached first base safely on a fielder’s choice to shortstop.

Weakland moved to second when Watson was safe at first on an error prior to scoring on Malinsky’s base hit to center field for a 5-1 advantage.

Brady yielded one earned run on one hit over seven innings for the win on the mound. He struck out nine and walked two.

Brownsville (1-5) came out strong in the first inning and scored one run without a hit when Johnathan Vasbinder walked to lead off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Jeremiah McDonald’s sacrifice flyout to left field for a 1-0 lead. McDonald singled in the seventh inning.

FAYETTE COUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE

CARMICHAELS 4, HOPWOOD 2 — Liam Lohr’s two-run double in the top of the ninth inning helped lead the Copperheads to a victory over Hopwood at Hutchinson Field in Hopwood.

Lohr may have had the game-winning hit, but Carmichaels starting pitcher Matt Bamford had 15 strikeouts over eight innings. He was relieved in the ninth for Ben Shields, who would earn the pitch victory, after throwing 136 pitches (87 strikes).

Bamford yielded two runs (none earned) on seven hits and walked two. Shields threw a scoreless ninth without allowing a hit. He walked one.

Shields was instrumental in pacing the Copperheads (2-1-1) offensively with a two-run double in the third inning that scored Devin Fluhmann and Alex VanSickle for a 2-0 lead.

Wyatt Nehls scored for Hopwood (2-4) when Ryan Covelens’ single to left field was misplayed to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third frame. Covelens drove in Anthony Piasecki for the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Shields had three hits and drove in two runs. Teammate Dom Colarusso had two singles.

Matthew Firestone had two base hits for Hopwood.
