California edges Brownsville in non-section baseball action
California could only muster one hit, but the Trojans were able to manufacture enough offense for the pitching of Logan Hartley and Owen Rechichar in a 3-1 victory over Brownsville on Thursday in non-section baseball action at Redstone Field in Republic.
Hartley didn’t allow an earned run on six hits over six innings. He had eight strikeouts and walked three. Rechichar pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save. He forced a groundout to third base, fielded a pop up and ended the game with a strikeout.
California (8-2, 9-6) scored the only runs it would need in the top of the third inning when Ian Grodz walked, advanced to second on Rechicar’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Landon Abercrombie’s single to left field. Abercrombie advanced to third on an error after his base hit before scoring on Weston Monticelli’s groundout to second for a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons (3-9, 3-12) scored in the bottom of the frame when Jeremiah McDonald laced a base hit to left field, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
McDonald started on the mound for the home team and allowed three runs (two earned) on one hits over seven frames. He had nine strikeouts and walked two.
The Trojans regained their two-run advantage in the fourth when Hartley walked, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout to second base. Hartley scored when Chase Shemansky grounded into a fielder’s choice at second base.
Cooper Cetera doubled for Brownsville. Teammate Jonah Dillinger had two base hits.
NORTHERN GARRETT, MD. 11, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 — The Huskies used a six-run third inning to pull away from the Colonials in non-section action at Garrett College.
Northern Garrett’s Jake Wampler threw a one-hitter over 4 ⅔ innings. He struck out five and walked two before Hunter Beitzel recorded a strikeout to put an exclamation point on the five-inning game that was called due to the 10-run rule.
Clay Smith’s single to right field with one out in the first inning broke up Wampler’s no-hitter. Kaiden Brady and Mason Usher each drew a walk for Albert Gallatin.
Jacob Chambers and Hunter Livengood had one double apiece. Chambers drove in two runs and Linvengood one. Landon Yoder had two hits and two RBIs. Teammate Bailey Turner had two hits.
SOFTBALL
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 6, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4 — Gabriella Marmie hit a three-run home run and drove in a fourth on a sacrifice flyout in the Rockets’ non-section victory over the Raiders at Waynesburg.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Ava Wood had four hits, including a double. Marmie added two singles to her home run.
Ellie Makel hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Rockets (13-5) added two in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth.
Waynesburg (6-8) scored two in the bottom of the fifth.
Makel and Bria Stephenson each had two hits.
Gina Tedrow had 14 strikeouts for the Raiders.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Emilee Bazzoli earned the victory in the pitching circle after yielding four runs (three earned) on eight hits. She struck out eight and walked three.
