Youth key in Uniontown’s win over Washington
Uniontown started four freshmen and one sophomore, but the youthful Red Raiders were up to the challenge in a 4-1 victory over Washington on Monday night at Bill Power Stadium in girls non-section soccer action.
Uniontown head coach Emily Baker adjusted her formation, and the mix of first year players and veterans led first-half goals from and freshman and senior, as ninth grader Emma Searcy found the back of the net and 12th-grade captain Sadie Hostletler also beat the Prexies’ keeper for a 2-0 lead.
Hostetler had a brace in the Red Raiders’ match against Beth-Center on Saturday in the Fayette County Coaches Association (FCCA) tournament at Laurel Highlands. She has three goals through three matches this season.
Junior captain Eleanor Carei and freshman Piper Shrock also scored.
Uniontown’s backline and keeper Kendal Nehls held down Washington’s offensive attack.
The Red Raiders (1-1-1) return to the pitch this afternoon against California (0-0-1) for an afternoon non-section match at 4 p.m.
The Trojans played Obama Academy (0-1-1) to a 2-2 draw on Monday.
In a Section 1-2A match on Monday, Ava DiAlesandro scored for Waynesburg Central (0-0-1, 0-0-1) in a 1-1 draw against Keystone Oaks (0-0-1, 0-0-1) at Dormont Memorial Stadium.
The Raiders host McGuffey (0-1-0, 0-1-0) this evening in section action at 7.
Connellsville (1-1-0) dropped a 1-0 non-section match against Baldwin (3-0-0) at home Monday evening.
The Falcons, who defeated Southmoreland, 4-0, to open their season on Saturday, travels to North Hills (0-1-0) tonight at 7:30 in non-league play.
In Section 4-2A action, the Scotties (1-0-0, 1-1-0) downed East Allegheny, 5-1, and Yough (1-0-0, 2-0-0) topped Mount Pleasant, 2-1.
BOYS SOCCER
Uniontown 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 — Braylon Woods converted from the penalty spot in the second half to help the Red Raiders rally to a non-section victory over the Warriors at Elizabeth Forward.
Uniontown (1-0-0) had a 1-0 lead in the first half when Woods set up Dean Kuna.
The Warriors (1-1-0) scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 advantage late in the second half before Ty Harvey netted the equalizer.
Senior Noah Holland stopped nine of 11 shots for the Red Raiders.
Uniontown hosted Morgantown, W.Va., on Tuesday.
BELLE VERNON 3, LATROBE 1 — Carter Schultz scored his first varsity goal and the Leopards earned a non-section triumph at James Weir Stadium.
Belle Vernon (1-0-0) had a 1-0 edge at halftime after Gavin Metzger found the back of the net.
Landon Bell and Schultz scored in the second half, and Morgan Bunch stopped six or seven shots on target.
Schultz’s tally came on the counter attack, as the Leopards sent a crisp pass into the box before he beat the Wildcats’ keeper.
Chris Showman assisted on one of Belle Vernon’s goals.
The Leopards opened Section 5-2A play on Tuesday against Ligonier Valley (0-1-0) at The Beach.

In other action on Monday, Albert Gallatin improved to 2-0-0 this season in a 4-0 victory over California in non-section play at Albert Gallatin. The Colonials defeated Beth-Center, 4-2, on Saturday in their first match of the year.
GIRLS TENNIS
HEMPFIELD 4, MOUNT PLEASANT 1 — The Vikings battled the Spartans tooth-and-nail but suffered a non-section setback.
Mount Pleasant’s Hannah Shawley and Chloe Zelmore won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles. Teammates Hailey Brown and Dani Trainer dropped a three-set thriller in the first doubles match.
The Vikings’ Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma lost in three sets. Megan Bullock lost in two competitive sets.
Ryleigh Drzal lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles.
