Anthony nets game-winning goal for Uniontown
In what was dubbed, “The Battle of the Old B&O Line,” by Joshua Scully, who was calling the match for Red Raider Athletics Network (RRAN), Uniontown earned a 1-0 victory over Morgantown on Tuesday night in non-section boys soccer play at Bill Power Stadium.
In front of the recently retired Ed Yauger, who served the district in as an educator and coach, the Red Raiders broke a scoreless match halfway through the second half when freshman Judah Anthony sent a free kick from 20 yards out to the left of the goal and past the outstretched arms of Mohigans keeper Guizeppie Thorn with 20:52 remaining in the match.
Anthony, who entered the match as a substitute, scored his first varsity goal to help Uniontown improve to 2-0-0. Morgantown fell to 2-2-1.
Red Raiders senior keeper Noah Holland made eight saves for the clean sheet. Uniontown put seven shots on target, and had six turned away by Thorn.
Due to a heat advisory in the area, the match was stopped midway through the first and second halves for a hydration break, which happened the second time after Anthony’s tally.
The Mohigans’ Suheil Elsarrar had an attempt sail just wide of the cage with 10 minutes remaining prior to Holland making a leaping save with 5:30 left after Morgantown sent in a free kick from 30 yards out.
The Red Raiders’ Josh Paris had a free kick go wide of the net with 2:30 remaining.
Uniontown came out strong in the first 20 minutes of the match, as Ty Harvey put two shots on Thorn and Cameron Solits added an attempt on goal, but the sophomore keeper denied all three opportunities.
Thorn was tested again with 12 minutes left in the opening 40 minutes when senior Tommy Hriscisce put a free kick on target from 41 yards away. Thorn stopped Hriscisce’s attempt, but couldn’t smother the attempt and fellow senior Braylon Woods had a chance to bury the rebound but couldn’t get a clean shot off.
The Mohigans had a corner kick sail over the net at 8:45 of the half before Woods was stopped by Thorn a minute later.
The first 10 minutes of the second half didn’t produce many clear-cut chances, but Holland was pressed into duty with a stop at 27:30 before making what turned out to be the save of the match with 24:45 remaining.
Morgantown earned a free kick from roughly 20 yards from the net on the left side of the field, and the Mohigans’ Sebastian Schneider put his attempt under the Red Raiders’ wall, or as Scully called it, “The Great Wall of Fayette Street,” but Holland dove to make the save and keep the match scoreless.
Morgantown had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. There were fouls but no yellow cards were issued as both clubs played a clean match.
Uniontown returns to action tonight at Ligonier Valley (0-1-0, 0-2-0) in non-section play. The match is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
BROWNSVILLE 5, ST. JOSEPH 0 — Senior Tristen King’s brace was more than enough scoring for the Falcons in a non-section victory at St. Joseph.
King scored an unassisted goal and was set up by freshman Evan Golden for his second tally. King assisted on Golden’s goal.
Sophomore Landyn Bachinski set up goals by sophomore Landon Stewart and freshman Jordan Incorvia.
Brownsville senior keeper Camden Kline didn’t have to make a save, as the Falcons’ backline, which was directed by junior center back Tom Milan, didn’t allow St. Joseph any room.
Junior outside back Austin Marshall and sophomore center back Noah Fitzgerald were key cogs in protecting Kline.
King (5) and Stewart (4) took nine corner kicks. Sophomore John King had seven shot attempts. Tristen King had five and Fitzgerald four.
Dustin Evans also had four attempts on target. Bachinski had three and Incorvia two. Golden, Brent Nichols and Liam Riley all attempted a shot on goal for a team total of 28.
