LH sweeps tri-match over Belle Vernon, Uniontown
Laurel Highlands swept a Section 2-3A boys golf match over Belle Vernon and cross-town rival Uniontown on Tuesday at South Union Township Municipal Golf Course.
The Mustangs defeated the Leopards, 203-219, and the Red Raiders, 203-226, to improve to 8-0 in the section and 8-1 overall. Belle Vernon (1-5, 1-6) topped Uniontown, 219-226.
Laurel Highlands’ Dan O’Neal and Ryan Revak shared medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38 on the front 9.
The Mustangs’ Kayden Smith came in third at 40. Teammates Aiden Milsom (42) and Andrew Gallick (45) rounded out the team scoring for head coach Mike Revak.
Luke Edwards led the Leopards in scoring at 41. Maddox Ceccarelli was second on his team with a 43 and Alex Quiggle finished with a round of 44.
Gino Scalise (45) and Ryder Schmidt (46) closed the scoring for Belle Vernon.
Elim Martin and Jackson Opar led the Red Raiders after each shot a round of 43. Teammate Liam Glover finished at 45.
J.J. Stewart (47) and Mason Peyton (48) had the fourth and fifth scores for Uniontown.
CARMICHAELS 219, BROWNSVILLE 250 — Eli Hastings led the way for the Mikes with a 1-under-par 36 at Carmichaels Golf Club in a Section 3-2A triumph.
Teammate Connor Lapana carded a round of 40, and Chase Ankrom finished his round at 42 for the home team.
Carmichaels’ Anthony Post finished at 45 and Joby Pratt rounded out the scoring at 56.
The Mikes’ improved to 4-3 in section and overall play.
Ava Rohland led the Falcons (1-8, 1-8) in scoring at 40. Brownsville’s Connor Brown finished his round at 50, and Dominic Capan closed his nine holes at 52. Adam Vojacek and Carson Varndell each shot 54 for the visitors.
MOUNT PLEASANT 214, BURRELL 235 — The Vikings’ Austyn Gross and Hunter Snyder broke 40 in a Section 2-2A victory at Norvelt Golf Course in Mount Pleasant.
Gross earned medalist honors with a round of 37. Snyder was two shots behind, as Mount Pleasant improved to 7-1 in the section and 8-2 overall.
The Vikings’ Trever Gonofsky carded a 43 and Ezra Bowman finished with a 47. Quinn Painter rounded out the scoring for the home team at 48.
The Buccaneers’ Brody Heasley and Owen Holm each shot a round of 46 to lead their squad. Logan Shank and Carl Thomas each closed their nine holes with a 47, and Wyatt Speer finished at 49.
ELIZABETH FORWARD 192, CONNELLSVILLE 227 — The Warriors had four break 40 on the front 9 at Youghiogheny Country Club in a Section 2-3A win over the Falcons.
Aaron Didjunas had a 1-over-par 37, while Luke Boyer and Julien Hredocki each shot a round of 38. Dom Donato came in at 39 and Gavin Madden carded a 40.
Wade Bryner led Connellsville (2-6, 3-8) in scoring at 43. Teammate Braydon Rockwell had a round of 44, and Owen Show birdied the seventh hole on his way to finishing at 45. Hunter Hughes’ 46 rounded out the scoring for the visitors.
Elizabeth Forward improved to 4-1 in section play. It had a match with Laurel Highlands postponed due to inclement weather.
THOMAS JEFFERSON 182, ALBERT GALLATIN 225 — The Jaguars were firing on all cylinders in a Section 2-3A triumph over the Colonials at Butler’s Golf Course.
Thomas Jefferson’s Ty Hartman and Nate Thatcher were 3-under-par after each shot a round of 33. Teammate Jake Pritchard was 2 over, and the duo of Hunter Haines and Mike Stock each carded a round of 39 on the front 9.
Albert Gallatin’s Garrett Snyder was 2 over with a round of 38. Teammate Gianni Paoli came in at 44, and Tyler Felio completed his nine holes with a 47.
Logan Diamond and Cami Williams each shot 48s to close the scoring for the Colonials (1-6, 1-6).
The Jaguars improved to 6-1 in the section and 8-2 overall.
GIRLS GOLF
SOUTHMORELAND 193, DEER LAKES 202 — The Scotties earned a Section 1-2A triumph over the Lancers.
Southmoreland’s Kendall Campbell led all scorers with a round of 42. Teammate Paige Gunderson had a 44. Riyah Younkin (50) and Allison Garsteck (57) closed the scoring for the Scotties.
Evie Venderschaff led Deer Lakes in shooting a round of 47. The Lancers’ Delany DeRosa had a round of 49. Ava Shea (52) and Corrine Barker (54) closed their team’s scoring.
GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 202, MOUNT PLEASANT 205 — The Centurions’ Kennedy Kelly had the low round with a 46, as Greensburg Central Catholic won a Section 1-2A match over the Vikings.
Bestabe Chapman had a round of 48 for GCC. Peyton Hassler (49) and Jailyn Wren (59) closed the scoring for the Centurions.
Ally Christner led Mount Pleasant (3-4, 6-5) in scoring with a round of 47. Teammate Morgan Miller carded a 48 and Victoria Tepper came in at 52.
Layla Gratzinger rounded out the scoring for the Vikings after finishing her nine holes with a 58.
HEMPFIELD 210, CONNELLSVILLE 212 — The Spartans edged the Falcons in a Section 3-3A match.
Hempfield’s Payton Estochin earned medalist honors with a round of 44.
Connellsville’s Addie Richter finished her round at 50.
BOYS SOCCER
MOUNT PLEASANT 4, JEANNETTE 0 — The Vikings had four different goal scorers and Grayson Gardner earned a clean sheet in a non-section play at Mount Pleasant.
Gavin Rummel, Ethan Russell, Bryson Bankosh and Tyke Snyder all found the back of the net for the home team.
Austyn Gross and Grant Zahrobsky had one assist apiece.
Grayson Gardner earned the clean sheet, as the Vikings improved to 2-0-0. Mount Pleasant is 1-0-0 in Section 5-2A.
SOUTHMORELAND 9, BROWNSVILLE 1 — The Scotties were too much for the Falcons in a Section 5-2A setback at Redstone Field in Republic.
Austin Marshall set up Tristen King for Brownsville’s lone goal.
The Falcons’ Camden Kline stopped 16 shots.
Southmoreland improved to 1-1-0 in the section and 1-2-0 overall. Brownsville dropped to 0-1-0 in section play and 1-3-0 across all competitions.
PENN-TRAFFORD 3, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 1 — Matt Kolencik scored for the Mustangs, but the Warriors earned a non-section win at Penn-Trafford.
Laurel Highlands (0-2-0) opens Section 2-3A play this evening when it hosts Trinity (0-0-2) at Mustang Field.
GIRLS SOCCER
BROWNSVILLE 10, MCKEESPORT 1 — The Falcons conceded a goal for the first time in five matches this season, but did more than enough scoring in a non-section victory over the Tigers at Redstone Field in Republic.
Addy Brown put four shots in the back of the net and added an assist for Brownsville (5-0-0). Teammates Ellie Haddad and Gloria Kovscek each had a brace, while Haddad had a helper.
The Falcons’ Avianna Hernandez added a goal and two assists, and Lexxi Gregg finished the scoring for the home team. Gregg also assisted on one tally.
Kinsey Salvey, Harper Rankin and Riley Rohland had one assist apiece.
Ava Rohland had five saves for Brownsville.
BALDWIN 1, BELLE VERNON 0 — The Highlanders broke a scoreless match with a late goal in the second half and held on for a non-section victory over the Leopards at Baldwin.
Belle Vernon (1-1-2) had a 17-5 advantage in shots, and earned six corner kicks but weren’t able to put the ball past the Highlanders’ keeper.
Skylar Salay made three saves for the Leopards.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
FRAZIER 3, CALIFORNIA 0 — The Commodores earned a Section 4-2A sweep over the Trojans.
Frazier won by set scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20.
The Commodores’ Allie Monack had 12 kills and 11 assists. Teammate Morgan Fisher added 16 assists and 11 service points. Addison Hiles had eight digs, and Anna Essington blocked four attacks for Frazier (1-0, 2-1).
Lola Marish had 10 service points, Mia West added nine kills and Grace Polkabla chipped in seven digs.
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 3, CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 0 — The Raiders earned the sweep in section play by set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-22.
Emily Rafferty had 13 kills and eight digs for Waynesburg Central. Railey Bochna led her team with 14 kills, 11 digs and one block.
The Raiders’ Chatham Knight had a team-high 28 assists to go along with three kills and three digs. Teammate Harper Grimes had four aces and three digs.
Waynesburg’s Lelia McCollum had three aces, four assists and four digs.
The Raiders improved to 1-0 in Section 4-3A play and 3-0 overall.
KISKI AREA 3, ALBERT GALLATIN 2 — The Cavaliers rallied to win the final three sets in a Section 2-5A victory over the Colonials.
Albert Gallatin won the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-20, prior to Kiski Area earning victories of 26-24, 25-22 and 15-11 to cap off the five-set thriller.
The Colonials’ Paityn Goletz had nine kills and one ace. Teammate Danica Sterbutzel had 24 digs.
Brynn Starkey added eight kills for Albert Gallatin. Gabby Penrose had seven kills and six aces, and Mila Giachetti also had seven kills. Giachetti added two aces.
The Colonials’ Isabelle Usher added five kills and an ace.
FRANKLIN REGIONAL 3, UNIONTOWN 1 — The Panthers took the first two sets before the Red Raiders battled back to force a fourth, but the visitors came away with a victory at AJ Everhart Memorial Gymnasium in Section 2-5A play.
Franklin Regional (1-0) won the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-20 prior to Uniontown (0-1, 3-0) winning the third, 28-26. The Panthers had a 25-23 edge in the fourth set.
Ava Livingood led the home team with nine kills. Teammate Hallie Campbell had 15 assists.
Addison Majoros had 11 digs to pace the Red Raiders’ defense. Sophia Capan and Kiley Morris chipped in with six digs apiece. Kathleena Orendorff led Uniontown with three blocks.
SERRA CATHOLIC 3, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 1 — The Gators forced a fourth set, but the Eagles earned a Section 2-1A triumph.
Serra Catholic won the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-17. Geibel Catholic won the third set, 25-20, but the Eagles won the fourth, 25-16.
Neville Petrosky led the Gators (0-1, 3-1) in digs with 22 and kills with 19. Teammate Annabelle Kelly had 20 assists. Riley Knizner had four blocks for Geibel Catholic.
MCGUFFEY 3, BROWNSVILLE 0 — The Highlanders won by set scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21 to sweep the Falcons in Section 4-3A action at Brownsville Area High School.
Ari Johnson led Brownsville in assists with 24. Teammate Aijanae Foster had nine kills and Amizhe Moore added six.
The Falcons’ Lena Rechichar had 12 service points and six kills.
Brownsville (0-1) looks to get back on track in section play this evening when it hosts Waynesburg Central.
PENN-TRAFFORD 3, CONNELLSVILLE 0 — The Falcons were swept by the Warriors in Section 2-5A play.
Penn-Trafford won by set scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-11.
BETH-CENTER 3, WEST GREENE 0 — The Bulldogs swept the Pioneers in Section 4-2A action after winning by set scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18.
