West Greene’s Grimes, Courtwright sweep section races
Joel Grimes and Maggi Courtwright were victorious in Division II, Section 2 cross country action on Tuesday around the campus of Waynesburg Central High School.
Grimes, a sophomore, won the race in 17:09, and Courtwright, a freshman, broke the tap in 22:48.
The Pioneers defeated Avella, 15-50, Washington, 15-41, and Waynesburg, 23-32, but lost to Burgettstown, 28-29.
West Greene sits at 6-2 in section play.
The Lady Pioneers topped Avella, 15-45, Burgettstown, 25-30, Waynesburg, 22-35, and Washington, 15-50, to improve to 6-2 in the section.
The Blue Devils’ Max Maltony was second to Grimes, and the Raiders’ Will Maxwell was third.
The Pioneers’ Kameron Hackney was fourth ahead of Burgettstown’s Mason Steel and Carter Baker in fifth and sixth.
West Greene’s Chaucer Von Scio was seventh before Waynesburg’s Ian Marshall and Bradley Huffman.
The Pioneers’ Landen Hill rounded out the top 10.
The Lady Raiders’ Rylie Shultz crossed the finish line in second place before the Lady Pioneers’ Kiera Collins in third.
Waynesburg’s Nevaeh Yeager was fourth before the Lady Blue Devils’ Jesse Tender and Aubriella Guiddy.
West Greene’s Norah Henderson placed seventh, while Burgettstown’s Mia Maltony and Chloe Andrews were eighth and ninth overall before Ella Courtwright of the Lady Pioneers finished 10th.
BOYS: CALIFORNIA 15, SERRA CATHOLIC, GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC, STEEL VALLEY, SOUTHMORELAND 50 — The Trojans’ Carter Kent topped the field in a time of 17:55 at White Oak Park.
The Centurions’ Kolbe Foss was second in 18:33 and Brownsville’s Max Hunter took third in 19:16.
California’s Quinn Barbero was fourth in 19:36.
GIRLS: GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 16, CALIFORNIA 41; SERRA CATHOLIC 28, CALIFORNIA 28 (SERRA WINS ON TIEBREAKER); CALIFORNIA 15, SOUTHMORELAND, STEEL VALLEY 50 — The Centurions’ Ainsley Stickle broke the tape in 21:09 to earn a victory by two minutes in the race at White Oak Park.
The Eagles’ Geneva Tenrosky was second in 23:09. Teammate Aleah Kerr was third in 23:22.
Greensburg’s Reagan Hassler was fourth in 23:27.
The Trojans’ Delaney Ridge was seventh in 24:53.
Serra Catholic earned the tiebreaker of California due to the Eagles having a sixth runner for scoring.
BOYS: BELLE VERNON 15, SOUTH ALLEGHENY, SOUTH PARK 50 — Leonidas Soto completed his race in 18:42, as the Leopards topped the Eagles and Gladiators in section play.
Belle Vernon is 6-1 in the section.
GIRLS: BELLE VERNON 15, SOUTH ALLEGHENY, SOUTH PARK 50 — Lily Walsh ran a 5K of 24:21 for the Lady Leopards in triumphs over the Lady Eagles and Lady Gladiators.
Belle Vernon improved to 7-0 in section action.
