The last free concert of the 2008 Summer Series, sponsored by the Connellsville Lions Club, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Connellsville Lions Square, located on Crawford Avenue. Harold Betters will be the featured performer. Refreshments will be available at the Lions Concession Stand. Those attending are asked to bring their lawn chairs.

Local rock band Happy Ending and Half Lit will play at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Fatboys Bar, located on Route 119 in Connellsville.

California Optimist Club, lower Wood Street in California, will hold California Gold Rush Days in memory of Jason G. Conaway today through Sunday. Hours are 3 to 9 p.m. today. Brother Jeep from Across the Creek will perform rhythm and blues music. On Saturday, shows will feature Jamie Harris, Shadows of the King Elvis show, from 1 to 3 p.m.; Almost Famous Bluegrass Band from 4 to 6 p.m.; and Mon Valley Push Polka Band from 6 to 9 p.m. Music will be featured from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, including legend music from the 1950s and ’60s from 3 to 4 p.m. and the Four Townsmen from 6 to 7 p.m. Dance schools will give martial arts demonstrations. Music on the Mon will present the young country group Kortney Jean and Stampede from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville. Her amazing voice echoes female artists such as Patsy Cline, Leanne Rhimes and Carrie Underwood. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the free music. Ohiopyle State Park & Friends of Ohiopyle will hold the second annual photo contest. Submissions are due by today. Images will be put on display at the Music In The Mountains Festival, and the public will have a chance to vote for its favorite photos. Final submissions will be viewed and judged by park staff and members of Friends of Ohiopyle. Submissions will be broken into professional and amateur groups. Professional photographers are those earning $250 or more in photos or photographic services a year. Winning photographs will be placed in the 2010 Friends of Ohiopyle calendar. Prizes will be awarded for the top submissions in each category. Images must be taken within Ohiopyle State Park. There is a submission fee. Photos should be matted 8-by-10-inch images with digital image also submitted at the time of entry. The categories include Nature Photography and Recreation Images. Submission fee will be waived for children 12 and younger, and these photos will be judged separately. Entry forms and details are available at the park office, visitor’s office or by e-mail at ohiopylesp@state.pa.us.

A canning workshop will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ohiopyle State Park. Those interested will meet at the Ohiopyle Stewart Community Center, where they will spend the day learning how to can and preserve locally grown produce that is in season. The group will be canning peaches, beans, tomatoes, pickles and making jam. Pre-registration for this workshop is required as is a fee for lunch.

American Legion, Post 51, will hold its annual family picnic from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the legion home on Gallatin Avenue in Uniontown. Members and their families are welcome.

Country music will be presented on Saturday at the Sagebrush Round-Up on Bunner Ridge, six miles east of Interstate 79 at Exit 139 near Fairmont, W.Va. An open stage will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Featured acts include The Round-Up Band, The Johnny Cash Revue, Mt. State Bluegrass Band and Gary and Donna Abel. There is an admission charge. Middletown Country Music Show line-up tonight will feature Jim Paugh, Betty Jo Heater and the Country Aires, Don Hayes and the Country Raiders and Your Request Band. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m., followed by the show at 6 p.m. The venue is located on Route 73 about two miles across from the Middletown Mall near Fairmont, W.Va. A karaoke night will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Confluence Park Gazebo. Those attending are asked to bring their own chairs. Prizes will be awarded for the best karaoke singers. This event is free, but donations will be accepted for the Confluence community.

Baseball, Hotdogs & Higbee (Chris Higbee of the former PovertyNeck Hillbillies) will be held tonight at the Washington Wild Things, Consol Energy Park, 1 Washington Federal Way, Washington. The activities and picnic will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the game at 7:05 p.m. The event will feature an all-you-can-eat buffet, kid’s activities, Chris Higbee, raffles and giveaways and fireworks. Those attending will have a chance to meet the Wildthings mascot. Autographs and photo opportunities will be available with the players. All children’s activities will be hosted by Lauriebelle’s Carnival, which is the brain child of Lauren Palmar who is dedicated to becoming a shining star in the Leukemia & Lymphomas Society’s Light the Night Campaign. She is 12 years old and attends Ben Franklin School in Uniontown. Palmar’s grandmother was diagnosed in late November with lymphoma.

The 14th annual Italian Day Festa sponsored by the Westmoreland Columbus 500 will be held today at Idlewild Park & Soak Zone. The special Italian heritage celebration, one of the largest in America, is for all Italian-Americans and those who would like to be. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend. The Festa day is filled with Italian food, entertainment and celebrities.
