Local roundup: Yellow Jackets split with first-place Grove City in softball

Autumn Stemple celebrated senior day by pitching Waynesburg to a 3-1 victory over visiting Grove City in the first game of a softball doubleheader on Saturday, handing the Wolverines their first PAC loss of the season.

Grove City (4-1, 12-3) bounced back to take the second game, 7-0, to earn a split.

Stemple allowed seven hits and no walks with one strikeout in the opener. The only run she gave up was on a solo home run by Cora Myers.

Bella DeMark was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI for the Yellow Jackets (4-2, 16-6) who also got a single and an RBI from Jamie Kelly and an RBI from Madie Cicero.

The second game was scoreless until the Wolverines pushed across four unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Abigail Meadors’ two-run single was the key hit in the inning. Meadors had two of Grove City’s four hits.

Meysa Heitmann was 2 for 3 with a walk for Waynesburg.

Losing pitcher Pressly Meadows gave up just one earned run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 16, WAYNESBURG 4; WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 9, WAYNESBURG 1 — Andrew Miko was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs in the first game and Josh Dezenzo and Zac Stern both homered and drove in three runs in the second game as the first-place Presidents (6-0, 15-2) swept a PAC doubleheader over the Yellow Jackets at Ross Memorial Park.

Anthony Pass gave up two unearned runs on six hits in five innings to earn the win in the first game. Eli Boring was 2 for 4 for Waynesburg (1-5, 8-14).

Brendan Cruz allowed one unearned run on two hits to take the win in the second game. Brody McMillan and Noah Gabriel each singled for the Yellow Jackets’ lone two hits.

SOFTBALL

CRESCENT (S.C.) 11, WEST GREENE 0 — Ryke Dotson doubled, singled and knocked in two runs, Alyssa Donkons had two hits and winning pitcher Savannah Rutter and McKeile Rotney also doubled as Crescent blanked the Lady Pioneers in a non-section game at the Ripken Experience at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

West Greene was limited to four hits with one single each by losing pitcher Sammi Zimmerman, Emmaline Beazell, Katie Brudnock and Madelyn Roberts.

West Greene (2-2) returns home Monday to host Beth-Center.

FRIDAY

BASEBALL

SOUTH PARK 4, BELLE VERNON 3 – Winning pitcher Cooper Hochendoner allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 inning as the Eagles held on to edge the Leopards in a non-section game.

Connor Bergman had two hits and two RBIs for Belle Vernon, which trailed 4-0 before pushing across three runs in the seventh inning. Chase Petrosky added a single and an RBI.

Leopards pitchers limited South Park to just two hits with 10 strikeouts but walked six batters.

SOFTBALL

WEST GREENE 10, FLINT HILL (VA.) 0 – Kendra Tharp hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run and a double as the Lady Pioneers rolled past Flint Hill in a six-inning, non-section game at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Emmaline Beazell doubled, singled and knocked in two runs and Katie Brudnock singled and also had two RBIs for West Greene. The Lady Pioneers also got a double and a single from Caitlin Whyte and two hits and an RBI from winning pitcher Sammi Zimmerman, who struck out six and walked three in tossing a four-hitter.

Josie Mason’s RBI single brought in Rylee Yeager in the bottom of the sixth to cap a five-run rally that ended the game on the mercy rule for West Greene.

Zaina Gilbert had two hits for Flint Hill.

WEST MIFFLIN 9, UNIONTOWN 4 – Samantha Tomko had two doubles and three RBIs in the unbeaten Lady Titans Section 2-4A win over the Lady Raiders.

West Mifflin (2-0, 6-0) also got a triple from Mia Bey and a double from Taylor Krivanek.

Grace Rodeheaver had a single and two RBIs for Uniontown (2-0, 3-1), which also got two hits from losing pitcher Emmaleigh Noah and a sacrifice fly from Juliet White.

PETERS TOWNSHIP 6, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 — Emery Grimes hit a pair of doubles in the Lady Indians’ Section 4-5A win over the Lady Colonials.

Keylee Lubic and Julianne Adder also doubled for Peters Township.

Mackenzie Chapman smacked a double for Albert Gallatin.

DEER LAKES 10, SOUTHMORELAND 0 — Joey Adams homered and Molly Farster doubled as the Lancers blanked the Scotties in a Section 1-3A game.

BOYS TENNIS

KISKI 3, MOUNT PLEASANT 2 — The Cavaliers swept both doubles matches on their way to a non-section victory over the Vikings.

Mount Pleasant’s two wins came at No. 1 singles with Austyn Gross sweeping Austin Beck, 6-2, 6-0, and No. 2 singles with Luke Hauser topping Max Holm, 6-0, 6-2.

The Vikings’ Nico Pisula fell to Luke Snedecor at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2.

Kiski’s Grayson Johngarlo and Landon Drum beat Austin Duvall and Tyler Barron in No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-3, and the Cavaliers’ Micah Thimons and Adam Troya knocked off Derrick Smith and Owen Spires in No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2.
