Donora man charged for assault, pulling gun on police

A Donora man is accused of pulling out a gun when police attempted to arrest him for assaulting his wife. Donora police charged William Russell, 81, on Monday with a felony of aggravated assault, and misdemeanors of reckless endangerment, simple assault and resisting arrest. According to the criminal complaint, shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 800 block of Castner Avenue after Diane Kariski-Russell called 911 to report that Russell had been drinking and assaulted her. State police respond to more than 1,000 crashes over New Year’s

State police responded to 1,098 crashes across Pennsylvania during its New Year’s enforcement period. Between Dec. 31 and Jan. 4, there were also 378 drivers arrested for driving under the influence. State police did not provide statistics for individual troops or counties. According to the state police report, there were three crashes that killed three people over the five-day period. There were also 4,377 speeding tickets issued, 508 citations for failure to wear a seat belt and 60 for not securing children in safety seats. Tax filing season starts Jan. 26

Monday, Jan. 26, marks the opening of the nation’s 2026 tax filing season, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.
