Brownsville Area High School will kick off spring musical season in Fayette County with a performance of “The Addams Family” that runs today through Saturday.
Director Tricia Rohlf said the students have a passion for theater like never before.
“Last year we did our first summer theater program, and it was hugely successful. The growth they showed was amazing,” Rohlf said. “The kids loved doing a comedy, ‘Spongebob Squarepants the Musical,’ and I cannot stress how much the summer program prepared the kids for this new show. It’s taken us to a whole new level of performance.”
They decided to take things to the next level when choosing this spring’s musical too. Instead of a simple comedy, they chose an extreme comedy they knew the audience would enjoy.
“The Addams Family” opened on Broadway in 2010, featuring an original story of the dark but comical family.
The dark and sullen Wednesday Addams has fallen in love, and it’s time for the parents to meet. In the meantime, Gomez knows something Morticia doesn’t and for the first time, he’s faced with the anxiety of keeping a secret from his wife.
Rohlf said the students have designed the set, planned the performance, and have been putting the finishing touches on the show for weeks now.
For this group of young thespians, performing is a fresh and new opportunity.
“I call it Brownsville’s renaissance after COVID. I’ve directed shows for 25 years but our program was shut down for a couple of years during the pandemic. We’ve done a few since the program opened back up but this new group of kids are on fire for theater. I’m just amazed,” Rohlf said.
“The Addams Family” will be presented in the Brownsville Area High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21, and at 2 p.m. Feb. 22. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at https://bahspa.booktix.com/dept/main/e/Addams.
