High school students at Laurel Highlands will bring the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Drake Shaffer, a teen idol drafted into the Army in the late 1950’s, to the stage this season.

Before the main character leaves, he’ll perform a new song on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and give one last kiss to a lucky fan, Kim MacAfee, played by Emma Miller.

When Conrad shows up in the sleepy town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, the teens’ reactions are more than the adults can take.

“Bye Bye Birdie” features classics like “Put on a Happy Face” and “Telephone Hour.”

The Tony Award-winning musical is packed with music, dance numbers and comedy at every turn. It debuted on Broadway in 1960 and has been pulling audiences in for decades.

The show will be performed at the high school auditorium in North Union Township at 7 p.m. March 7 and 8, and 2 p.m. March 9
