Belle Vernon came out strong, as Devin Whitlock and Hunter Ruokonen were shooting lights out in the first quarter, but Highlands showed why it was the No. 1 seed in defeating the Leopards, 72-54, on Saturday in the WPIAL Class 4A Championship Final at the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

Southmoreland had its best girls basketball season in program history but coach Brian Pritts felt it was relationships and the way his girls played together and for each other that was just as important as his team's talent level.

Top-seeded North Catholic pulled away in the second quarter and handed second-seeded Southmoreland its first loss of the season, 61-44, in the WPIAL Class 4A girls basketball championship game at Petersen Events Center on Friday.

Most teams that are entering a WPIAL championship game with an undefeated record have at least one if not more superstars but that's not so with Southmoreland which has featured an array of good players with seemingly a different heroine every game.
