Local fitness event to benefit ‘Amy’s Army’

2 min read

Saint Patrick’s Day revelers will have the opportunity to get in some exercise before the parties start on March 15 in the St. Patty’s 5K and Fitness Mile.

The event will feature a 5K (3.1 miles) run and a fitness mile that will consist of seven exercises while running from station-to-station. The exercises will include burpees, situps, air squats, lunges, overhead press, pushups and run. The 5K will begin at Uniontown Area High School’s track and the course will run through the city of Uniontown and South Union Township.

The event will name Fayette County’s Fittest individual, as the male and female who does the 5K and Fitness Mile combined, and in the fastest time, will receive the honor.

Net proceeds will benefit “Amy’s Army,” a local chapter of PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network). The event is dedicated in memory of Amy Tungate, the co-founder of Uniontown CrossFit, who was a mother, athlete and local third-grade teacher. Tungate passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2021.

Race registration will include a t-shirt, post-race food, a cup, swag bag and green beer at the after-party for those 21-and-older. Those under 21 and not interested can sample root beer. Post-race giveaways will be provided, and St. Patty’s Day costumes are encouraged.

The 5K Run/Walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and the Fitness Mile at 9:15 a.m. The awards and afterparty is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
