2019 — Austin Petraglia scattered four hits to lead Connellsville to a 7-1 victory over visiting Colonial 3 in Fayette County American Baseball League action. Petraglia struck out 10 and allowed the lone run in the top of the sixth inning. He also had a double in the win. Tanner Orndorff led the Connellsville offense with three singles. Brant Bonadio and Caleb Dillon both singled twice and drove in a run. Cole Shearer tripled and drove in a pair of runs in the win.

2019 — Luke Robinson yielded one hit over five innings in Carmichaels’ 8-0 victory over the Fayette Raiders in Fayette County Baseball League action. Robinson had 11 strikeouts and three walks. The Copperheads’ Joby Lapkowicz and Hunter Robinson each hit two-run home runs, and Chuck Gasti had two hits, including a triple. Brody Bonadio had three singles for Carmichaels.

2019 — Jordan Kearns drove in six runs as California opened the PIAA Class A baseball playoffs with a 17-5 win in five innings over Rockwood. Kearns’ key hit was a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning. He also drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Nate Zemany drove in three runs, and winning pitcher Jacob Swartz and Payton Conte both had two RBI. The Trojans (19-1) advanced to play West Middlesex (20-1) in the quarterfinals.

Britney Bevan would have been a four-year starter in softball who played multiple positions including pitcher. She was part of the 2017 team that made one of the biggest comebacks in WPIAL playoff history when it rallied from an 11-0 deficit to beat Union, 19-15. Colton Lusk would've been a four-year letterman in baseball and was the starting right fielder on last year's WPIAL championship team. He also was part of the 2017 district title squad. 2019 — Jeremy Saliba threw a six-hit shutout as Farmington blanked Smithfield, 2-0, in Fayette American Legion Baseball League action. Saliba walked none and struck out seven. Wyatt Rishel had two hits, Nolan Sennett singled and scored and Jeff King contributed one hit and one RBI for Farmington.

2019 — The game was much different, but the outcome was still the same when Laurel and Frazier met in the WPIAL Class AA softball championship game for the second year in a row with the Lady Spartans defeating the Lady Commodores, 9-3. Kayla Ruperto smashed a home run and two doubles and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the third-seeded Lady Spartans (20-2) successfully defended their WPIAL title.

2019 — The West Greene softball team won its fourth consecutive district title with an 11-0 victory in six innings over third-seeded Union in the WPIAL Class A championship. The Lady Pioneers were the fifth softball team to complete a four-peat. Winning pitcher Jade Renner went 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored a pair of runs. She scattered two hits with two strikeouts.

2019 — Top-seeded California held off a late rally to defeat Union, 9-6, to win the WPIAL Class A baseball championship. The WPIAL title was the sixth for the Trojans. Brody Conner went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI for California. Nate Zemany was the winning pitcher and Jacob Swartz picked up the final three outs for the save.

2019 — John Palmer and Josh Szerensci combined on a six-hitter as Smithfield-Fairchance defeated visiting Belle Vernon, 4-1, in Fayette American Legion baseball action. Palmer allowed one run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Szerensci closed out the game with two scoreless innings in relief.

2019 -- Waynesburg Central sophomore Taylor Shriver finished in a two-way tie for third place in the Class AA pole vault after she cleared 12 feet at the PIAA Individual Track & Field Championships. 2019 — Frazier’s Julian Muccioli, Waynesburg Central’s Scott Benco and Monessen’s Darnel Howell all made the medal stand on the first day of the PIAA Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University. Benco ended his career with a fifth-place medal in the Class AA javelin with a throw of 179-4. Howell cleared 6-2 to finish alone in seventh place in the Class AA high jump. Muccioli finished seventh in the Class AA long jump.

SHIPPENSBURG --  Gionna Quarzo was all smiles Saturday morning when she crossed the finish line without anyone chasing her, successfully defending her gold medal in a PIAA record time of 10:25.91.
