Hearing set to discuss closure of Uniontown schools
A Scottdale man died Tuesday afternoon when his tri-wheeled motorcycle was involved in a rear-end crash with another vehicle in East Huntingdon Township. Mark F. Hixson was traveling north on Route 819 shortly before 2:45 p.m. when he struck the rear of an SUV near Cedar Drive, Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman said in a press release. Hixson was wearing a helmet, but was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the ground, Ackerman said. He was pronounced dead by the coroner’s office less than an hour later. The Keystone Exams, which are part of a Pennsylvania high school student’s graduation requirements, could soon be under the microscope following a vote last week in the state’s House of Representatives asking that a study be done to determine if alternatives could be used instead. The vote was 191-10, indicating broad bipartisan support for the measure in the narrowly divided House. It would require the commonwealth’s education department to look at whether other standardized tests that high school students take, such as the SAT, ACT or Smarter Balanced assessments, could be used in its place. The Tri-Valley Artifact Show will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 902, 124 W. Pike St., Houston. Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania (DVSSP) launched a new Significant Other Support Group to meet the needs of those often overlooked in domestic violence situations - the partners, family members, and friends of those how have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence.
