Monessen delays start of school year

The Monessen School District will delay the start of its school year until Sept. 8 as a "precautionary measure" after fungal growth was found on water-damaged building materials in several areas of the middle school/high school. In a post on the school district website, Superintendent Dr. Robert Motte said the district will "complete necessary building maintenance and ensure a safe, fully prepared environment for our students and staff." Fayette man accused of possessing child porn

A Farmington man is in custody on child pornography charges. Police recovered multiple images from the phone of Gary Phares Jr., 39, as the result of an investigation last month by state police in Uniontown and the state police’s Computer Crime Unit, according to charging documents. Phares is charged with possessing child sexual abuse material. Judge Nathan Henning set Phares’ bond at $100,000 Friday. He was lodged in the Fayette County jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 26.
